Tootsie Rolls versus Choco Chews

by Anne Paddock

Some baby boomer candy aficionados are old enough to remember the commercial where Mr. Owl asked the rhetorical question: “how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop?” According to Mr. Owl, the answer is “three” but that’s because he bit into the pop to get to the Tootsie Roll center (patience wasn’t one of his virtues). The actual answer is 252-364 licks according to a group of engineering students at Perdue University. But, that’s besides the point. The real issue is the Tootsie Roll center because that’s what Mr. Owl and every fan of the Tootsie Roll wants.

Choco_ChewsThe problem with Tootsie Rolls are the ingredients:  sugar, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, condensed skim milk, cocoa, whey, soy lecithin, artificial and natural flavors. A better choice is the organic Choco Chews by TruJoy Sweets which taste very similar to a Tootsie Roll, only better. Made with non-GMO ingredients: organic dried cane syrup, organic tapioca syrup, organic palm oil, organic cocoa powder, organic vanilla flavor, organic chocolate liquor, and organic rice extract, Choco Chews have a softer, chewier texture and a richer, chocolate flavor.Choco_Chews

A comparison of the nutritional information of both candies is as follows:

Brand            Pieces          Grams        Calories          Fat          Sugar       Protein      Sodium      Fiber

Tootsie Roll       6                    40               140                3              19                 1              15               0

Choco Chews     7                  42               160               4.5            15                 1               0                1

Neither candy is what most people would call a healthy, wholesome snack. After all, it’s candy. Nutritionally, both are similar although Tootsie Rolls are higher in sugar while Choco Chews are higher in fat.  Organic Choco Chews are like Tootsie Rolls but with better ingredients (Choco Chews are not made with corn syrup, artificial flavors, or dairy products).Choco_Chews

Organic Choco Chews are individually wrapped and sold in 2.3 ounce packets (that contain about a dozen Choco Chews) that self for about $1.99 on Tootsie Rolls are less expensive  at about $3.79 for a 12 ounce bag which equates to about $0.73 for a 2.3 ounce portion primarily because the ingredients used to make Tootsie Rolls are cheaper. Higher quality ingredients simply cost more (and often make a better tasting product – like Choco Chews).

Tootsie Rolls use palm oil now! The US government occasionally listens to the whole medical community, after years or decades of being outcry. Goodbye partially hydrogenated heart attacks!
