Executive Compensation at Samaritan’s Purse (2020)

Samaritan’s Purse is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) established in 1970 by Bob Pierce who died in 1978. W. Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham) became Chairman, President, and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse in 1979 and has held the position since although he is also an evangelist for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Based in Boone, North Carolina, Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational Christian organization that provides “spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.”  How do they do this?  Primarily through grants (i.e. transporting shoebox gifts:  a box filled with toys, supplies, and hygiene items) which for the past several years averaged 40% of revenue although in 2020, the percentage was lower at 28% because Samaritan’s Purse focused on building up net assets and to do this they spent significantly less than they collected:  Samaritan’s Purse only spent $72 out of every $100 raised.  In actual dollars, Samaritan’s Purse raised about $895 million, spent about $670 million, putting about $225 million in savings in 2020. Executive Compensation at the UJA Federation of NY

The United Jewish Appeal Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of NY, Inc is also known as the UJA Federation of NY.  Based in New York City, the UJA Federation of NY is primarily engaged in awarding grants: of the $240 million raised in the year ending June 30, 2020, $163 million (68% of revenue) were awarded in grants. The second largest expense was for compensation. 506 employees received $58 million in compensation, or an average of $115,000.

There are 161 independent voting members (directors) of the UJA Federation of NY,  of which 96 (60%) are male and 65 (40%) are female.

Executive Compensation at the University of Chicago (2020)

The University of Chicago (UC) is a private nondenominational research university that accepts about 8% of the students who apply. UC has approximately 7,000 undergraduate students and 10,000 graduate students.  The annual tuition with room and board for an undergraduate is about $80,000 annually which means a 4-year degree is about $320,000.

There are 46 voting members (trustees) of the governing body (board of trustees), 39 of whom are independent.  However, the Form 990 reports 50 trustees, which appears to be due to timing differences.  40 of the 50 (80%) are male while 10 of the 50 (20%) are female. Read more »
