Executive Compensation at Carle Health Care, Carle Foundation Hospital, and Carle Foundation (2024)

Carle Health is a vertically integrated healthcare system (health insurance, medical care, education, and research) with 8 hospitals and group practices that employ more than 1,300 physicians and advanced practice providers and 12,000 workers in Illinois and Indiana.  Carle Health also encompasses a medical school (Carle Illinois College of Medicine at Methodist College) and a research Institute (Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute).

Based in Urbana, Illinois, Carle Health consists of 29 tax-exempt organizations and 27 related organizations taxed as a partnership, corporation, or trust. This post will report the executive compensation as reported on three tax-exempt non-profits:  Carle Health Care;, Carle Foundation Hospital (its flagship hospital in Urbana, IL), and the Carle Foundation (the parent company). A brief synopsis of these three organizations is summarized as follows:

Carle Health Care (CHC)

CHC is a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation with about 1,700 employees, whose sole member is the Carle Foundation. In 2024, total revenue was reported to be $355 million, most of which came from patient service and programs ($350 million). Expenses were $500 million with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($395 million), internal management fees ($42 million), and fees for services ($24 million).  The organization ended 2024 with net assets of $29 million.

Carle Foundation Hospital (CFH)

CFH is a 453 bed regional care Trauma 1 hospital in Urbana, IL with about 5,300 employees. In 2024, total revenue was $1.5 billion, most of which came from patient care (net). Expenses totaled $1.2 billion with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($417 million), patient care supplies ($308 million), internal management fees ($236 million), office-related expenses ($77 million), and fees for services ($87 million).  The organization had $483 million in net assets at the end of 2024.

Carle Foundation (CF)

CF is the parent organization of the health care system with about 1,700 employees.  In 2024, total revenue was $693 million, most of which came from management fees ($515 million) from related organizations, and investment income/gains ($92 million).  Expenses totaled $641 million  (including $74 million of depreciation) with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($289 million), office-related expenses ($144 million), and fees for services ($84 million).  Net assets were $1.8 billion (compared to $1.6 billion in 2023; the result (primarily) due to an intracompany receivable/payment settlement.
