Executive Compensation at Sentara Health (2024)

by PP

Sentara Health is a healthcare system with more than 34,000 employees who work at more than 400 sites of care including 12 hospitals in Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.  In addition, Sentara includes Optima Health, a health insurance provider for more than 1 million people in Virginia and Florida.

Although Sentara Health generally refers to one organization, Sentara Health includes dozens of organizations:  24 tax-exempt organazations, 20 taxable as a partnership, and 25 taxable as a corporation or trust. For the purpose of this post, the executive compensation at Sentara Health , a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) based in Virginia Beach, Virginia that employs the CEO and President and supporting staff that appears to provide overall management to all the organizations in the system – is addressed in this post.

Sentara Health (the parent organization) reported total revenue of $1.3 billion in 2024, most of which came from gains from the sale of assets ($909 million), and $312 million from “support services” (related organizations for which the parent organization provides management and oversight). In addition, $114 million came from investment income.  Interesting to point out is that a negative $183 million in revenue (why this is reported as negative revenue as opposed to an expense is not addressed) was posted on the Statement of Revenue (Part VIII) of the Form 990.

Expenses totaled $443 million in 2024, most of which included compensation ($205 million), fees for services ($115 million), and grants ($65 million). 1.090 employees received $205 million in compensation, which equates to an average compensation of $188,000.  However, only 438 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation which appears to mean there were some very highly compensated employees.

Net assets are $5.2 billion at year-end 2024.

Sentara Health is governed by 15 directors, 14 of whom are independent. On the Form 990 (2024), 17 directors are listed (due to timing differences), of which 12 (71%) are male and 5 (29%) are female.
