Executive Compensation at the NFL Players Association (2024)

The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (5) – a labor union affiliated with the AFL-CIO – that represents players in the National Football League (32 teams divided into two conferences, that can have a maximum of 53 players each).

5 key facts reported on the Form 990 (2024 for the year ending February 29, 2025) to know about the NFLPA include:

1. The NFLPA has 32 independent voting members (directors) of its governing body (board of directors);
2. The organization is based in Washington, DC and has 130 employees;
3. Total revenue was $164 million (compared to $148 million in 2023, $123 million in 2022) with $22 million from gains and investment income, $60 million from member dues, $77 million from royalties, and $5 million from management, agent, and financial advisor fees;
4. Total expenses were $77 million with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($33 million), fees for services – legal, accounting, lobbying, other – ($17 million), travel ($9 million), and bad debt ($6 million) and
5. Net assets were $1.2 billion at year end, up from nearly $1 billion at the beginning of the year.  The improvement is attributable to two things:  the organization spent $86 million less than revenue received; and $74 million in net unrealized gains.

The 10 most highly compensated employees received $13 million in compensation in 2024.

The NFLPA paid for first class and charter travel and companion travel, health or social club dues or initiation fees.  

Total travel costs were $9 million in 2023.  Specifically,

• $ 1.2 million:  Jenson Hughes dba Hillard Heintze, of Baltimore, MD for background investigation
• $0.9 million:  Price Waterhouse Coopers, of Florham Park, NJ for accounting
• $0.4 million:  PRA Events, of Chicago, IL for event management
• $0.4 million  :  Renaissance Associates, of Livingston, NJ for consulting

In summation, the NFLPA is a labor organization that represents the football players in the National Football League. The NFLPA has historically raised about $100-$150 million annually (but reported more than $200 million in 2020 due to gains on the sale of assets and investment income) but spends significantly less which has allowed the organization to accumulate $1.2 billion in net assets.

Executive compensation is high for DeMaurice Smith who received $44 million in compensation from 2015-2024, or an average of $4.4 million annually.  Smith, who has been the Executive Director since 2009, left in July, 2023 and was replaced by Lloyd Howell, the former CFO of Booz Allen, who lasted two (2) years resigning in July, 2025 amid a federal investigation and allegations of judgment.
