How Revenue is Spent at the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) (2019)

The International Union of Police Associations AFL-CIO (IUPA) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (5) – a labor union –  whose mission is to be “the voice of law enforcement officers.”  With an estimated 23,000 members, IUPA is the largest police union in the AFL-CIO..

According to the Form 990 (2018) covering the year April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019 submitted to the IRS, IUPA reported $11.7 million in revenue (down 40% from $19.5 million the previous year) of which only $3.7 million came from membership dues. $8 million came from contributions which were primarily phone solicitation and telemarketing fundraisers who raised $7.9 million and were compensated $7 million, netting IUPA about $900,000. In other words, for every $1 raised by the phone solicitation fundraisers, only 11 cents went to IUPA because the phone solicitors kept 89 cents of every $1 or $89 of every $100 raised. Read more »

Where Does $100 to Together Rising Go?

If you’ve never heard of Together Rising, you probably will in the near future because this non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) really does donate almost all of the funds it raises to other non-profits.

Established in 2013 by the author, Glennon Doyle (Carry On, Warrior; Love Warrior; and Untamed), Together Rising is about helping people out in a crisis situation by focusing on time-limited fundraisers (called Love Flash Mobs) to meet a particular need in a matter of hours. In essence, Together Rising acts as a vetting organization – similar to United Way (but without all the overhead) – with most revenue “granted” to other non-profits who then provide the assistance to alleviate a crisis. Where Does $100 to the Fresh Air Fund Go?

The past 5 years have been a revenue roller coaster ride for the Fresh Air Fund (FAF). In 2014, the FAF reported total revenue of $19 million and they had $138 million in net fund assets. In 2015 and 2016, revenue grew to $27 million and $38 million, respectively and the endowment remained stable at $133 million and $127 million, respectively. But something happened in 2017. Revenue dropped to $24 million although the endowment increased to $136 million. In 2018, revenue dropped again, to $16 million although, again the endowment remained stable (and actually increased slightly to $139 million due to unrealized gains on investments).  But, no one seems to be talking or writing about what happened to cause the most recent decline in revenue.
