22 Employees of Advent Health Take Home $203 Million in Compensation

22 of the most highly compensated employees of AdventHealth (formerly known as Adventist Health System until 2019 when the 501 (c) (3) “rebranded” itself) is one of the largest non-profit health care providers in the United States with 50 hospitals and hundreds of care sites in 9 states. Based in Altamonte Springs, Florida, AdventHealth is a very large system with 87 tax-exempt non-profits, 16 organizations taxable as partnerships,  and 21 organizations taxable as a corporation or trust) received $203 million in compensation from 2016-2023 (with several employees only recently joining the organization, which means the highly compensated employees employed in any of the years from 2016-2022 but not in 2023 are not included – including Daryl Tol who received $13 million from 2016-2022, Michael Schultz who received $12 million from 2016-2022, and Eddie Soler who received $10 million from 2016-2022 – which means the total amount would be even higher if all the most highly compensated employees were included): Read more »

Based in Altamonte Springs, Florida, AdventHealth is a very large system with 87 tax-exempt non-profits, 16 organizations taxable as partnerships,  and 21 organizations taxable as a corporation or trust.  

This post looks at the executive compensation at  Adventist Health System Sunbelt Healthcare Corporation (AHSSHC), the tax-exempt, non profit organization that provides management, leadership, and oversight to the affiliates.  It is important to note there are dozens of other related and affiliated non-profits and for profit organizations  related to AdventHealth that are not covered in this post. Executive Compensation at the US Chamber of Commerce (2023)

The US Chamber of Commerce (also known as the Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America) is the largest business organization in the United States representing businesses. A tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 6 organization, the US Chamber of Commerce (USCOC) is based in Washington, DC.

The USCOC raised $197 million in 2022 (compared to $210 million in 2022, $204 million in 2021, $230 million in 2020 and $173 million in 2019), primarily from contributions, gifts and grants with only $4 million coming from membership dues).

Expenses totaled $207 million, with the largest expense reported to be compensation ($106 million), followed by fees for services ($42 million), office-related expenses ($20 million). A $5 million adjustment to net assets allowed the organization to close the year with $86 million in net assets (compared to $81 million at the beginning of the year).   Read more »

20 Employees at St Jude Take Home $100 Million in Compensation

20 of the most highly compensated employees at St Jude in 2024 received more than $100 million in compensation from 2017-2024.  It is important to note St Jude is actually two organizations:

  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (St Jude): the 73-bed children’s hospital with more Han 7,300 employees that provides research and medical care; and
  • American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC): the fundraising arm; an organization with 2,100 employees that exists to raise funds for St. Jude’s

Although most non-profits do not separate fundraising from services, St. Jude’s does,:  St. Jude relies on ALSAC for the majority of it’s revenue and has a beneficial interest in the organization. Read more »

  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (St Jude): the 73-bed children’s hospital with 7,374 employees that provides research and medical care; and
  • American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC): the fundraising arm; an organization with 2,100 employees that exists to raise funds for St. Jude’s

Although most non-profits do not separate fundraising from services, St. Jude’s does, so both organizations need to be analyzed because St. Jude’s relies on ALSAC for the majority of it’s revenue and has a beneficial interest in the organization. Read more

Where Does $100 to St Jude Go (2024)?

St. Jude’s is one of the most popular non-profit organizations in the country because the charity’s mission appeals to donors:  they treat and help children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. But, before making donations, donors should understand where revenue is spent and that St. Jude’s is actually two organizations:

  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Inc. (St. Jude) – the 73-bed hospital and research center
  • American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities  (ALSAC) – the fundraiser

ALSAC  “exists for the sole purpose of raising funds and building awareness to support the current and future needs of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Inc” while St. Jude engages in research and provides care and services to sick children and their families. Read more »

Executive Compensation at Turning Point USA (2024)

Turning Point USA is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 that advocates conservative principles on high school, college, and university campuses and in convention centers that focus on attracting high schoolers, college students, and young adults ages 15-25 who they often refer to as activists.

Established in 2012 by the late Charles Kirk, Turning Point USA has three (3) related tax exempt organizations:

  • Turning Point Endowment, Inc.:  a 501 (c) 3 described as a “supporting org to Turning Point USA”
  • America’s Turning Point, Inc:  a 501 (c) 3  described as “education of students”
  • Turning Point Action, Inc.:  a 501 (c) 4  described as “education of students” where contributions are not tax deductible

Turning Point USA is overseen by 5 voting members (directors) of the governing body, 4 of whom are independent. All directors are male. Read more »
