Executive Compensation at St Joseph Health System (2020)

St. Joseph Health System (SJH) is a California-based non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) that is part of Washington-based Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH).  Affiliated with the Catholic church, SJH is an integrated healthcare system serving residents in northern California with 5 hospitals and numerous healthcare facilities staffed by thousands of employees.  Note:  SJH which also served West Texas and East New Mexico merged with Providence Health and Services (PH&S) to form PSJH in 2016.

In 2020, SJH reported total revenue of $482 million (compared to $547 million the prior year), most of which came from two sources:  support and services ($364 million) and home health care ($99 million).

Expenses totaled $486 million (including $46 million in depreciation) in 2020 with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($246 million) and fees for services ($118 million).

1,592 employees received $246 million in compensation, which equates to an average compensation of $155,000.  492 employees received more than $100,000 with the most highly compensated listed below:

  • $1,548,935:  Kevin Manemann, EVP and CE, Physician Enterprise
  • $1,328,105:  Kevin Klockenga, Regional CE, Northern CA
  • $1,039,841:  Brian Helleland, Chief Executive, SJF
  • $1,026,776:  Michael Marino, Chief Med Info Officer, PSJH
  • $  981,641:  Jeremy Zoch, Chief Executive, SJO
  • $  954,403:  Roberta Luskin-Hawk, Chief Executive, Eureka
  • $  864,637:  Jim Watson, Assistant Secretary
  • $  795,726:  Frank Beirne, Regional CEO, Northern CA
  • $  791,716:  Seth Teigen, Chief Executive, MHrMC
  • $  665,715:  Lisa Weaver, Chief Integrity and External Relations Officer
  • $  661,786:  Larry Coomes, Chief Executive, QVMC

10 of the 12 (83%) most highly compensated employees listed above are male while 2 of the 12 (17%) are female.

In addition, the following highly compensated employees were reported (but compensated from a related organization):

  • $1,139,957:  John Whipple, Assistant Secretary
  • $  798,442:  Gregg Hoffman, President/CEO (part year)
  • $  749,045:  Walter Cathey, Chief Executive, Covenant

9 of the 13 (69%) most highly compensated employees (from affiliated organizations) are male while 4 of the 13 (31%) are female.

The following individuals received severance payments in 2020:

  • $507,235:  Mike Butler
  • $750,000:  V Venkat Bhamidipati
  • $207,274:  Shannon Dwyer

179 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation. The five most highly compensated were reported to be:

  • $28 million:  US Bank Corporate Payment Systems, of St Louis, MO for account management
  • $12 million:  Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP, of Seattle, WA for legal services
  • $ 7 million:  Medical Information Technology, of Chicago, IL for software services
  • $ 7 million:  Cardinal Health, of Los Angeles, CA for medical services
  • $ 5 million:  Global Sourcing Group, of Burlington, VT for communication services
