Executive Compensation at Geisinger (2024)

Geisinger is a large integrated healthcare system with an estimated 24,000 employees working in 10 hospitals and numerous medical care facilities that primarily serve the central and northeastern Pennsylvania region.  Acquired by Risant Health, Geisinger is now a part of Kaiser Permanente (who counts Risant Health as a subsidiary).

In 2024, Geisinger was made up of many organizations:  54 tax-exempt entities, 10 taxable partnerships, and 15 taxable corporations or trusts.  These organizations contribute to an organization called Geisinger System Services who provides overall management services to the organizations that makeup Geisinger Health.  In 2024, these organizations paid more than $800 million to Geisinger System Services, who spent about half of that revenue on compensation ($415 million), office-related expenses ($167 million), and fees for outside services ($154 million).

4,643 employees at Geisinger System Services received $415 million in compensation or an average of $89,000.  751 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation with 24 of the most highly compensated employees reported to be:

24 of the most highly compensated employees listed above received $42 million in compensation in 2024.  The most highly compensated employee was Jaewon Ryu who received $14 million in 2024 and $43 million from 2018-2024:

Geisinger System Services made gross up payments or provided tax indemnifications.  In addition, the organization made a $50,000 loan to Mike Angelakos for “recruitment.” The current balance due is $11,631.  In addition, a $30,000 loan was made to Sean Koenig, also for “recruitment.”  The balance due is $10,254.  And, lastly, a $100,000 loan was made to Terry Gilliland, with the balance due $89,648.

244 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation with the five (5) most highly compensated reported to be:

  • $15 million:  EPIC Systems Corp, of Milwaukee, WI for maintenance services
  • $33 million:  Deloitte Consulting, of Dallas, TX for professional services (accounting?)
  • $18 million:  Microsoft Corp, of Dallas, TX for software services
  • $13 million:  Vision Media, of Bellevue, WA for professional services (marketing?)
  • $10 million:  Salesforce, of Dallas, TX for professional services (staffing?)

In summary, the non-profits, partnerships, trusts, and corporations that make up Geisinger Health paid more than $800 million annually to one of their own organizations to manage themselves in 2024.  More than half of that revenue (about $415 million) was paid to about 4,600 employees for compensation in 2024, of which $42 million was paid to 24 employees of Geisinger System Services in 2024.
