No Kid Hungry is actually a national campaign started in 2010 by Share Our Strength (SOS), a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 whose focus is on ending childhood hunger in the United States although they do limited international work. Based in Washington, DC, SOS does this by raising funds and awarding grants (20% of revenue in 2020; 12% in 2019) and advocating for this disadvantaged group.
SOS has 17 voting members (directors) of the governing body; 11 (65%) of whom are male; 6 (35%) of whom are female.
So, if you donated $100 in 2020, how much went to feeding the kids? It depends on how you define “feeding the kids.” Some people would narrowly define the phrase as actually feeding the children whereas some people would more broadly define the phrase by including all efforts going into feeding hungry children. A tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 based in Richmond, VA, ChildFund has 17 independent voting members (directors) on its governing body (Board of Directors) with 9 females and 8 males.
In 2020, ChildFund reported total revenue of $198 million (compared to $196 million in 2019) most of which came from contributions, gifts and grants. Way back in 1938, the China Children’s Fund was established by a Presbyterian minister to provide assistance to children in China after the war (Sino-Japanese War) by starting a child sponsorship program where sponsors (typically in the US) would pay a monthly fee to sponsor a child so that the child would have basic needs (food, health, etc) provided.
In 1951, the name was changed to the Christian Children’s Fund when the program expanded to other countries. In 2002, the Christian Children’s Fund along with 11 other child sponsorship organizations founded a worldwide network – the ChildFund Alliance, a group of 12 organizations that partner with local organizations in other countries. Save the Children – the Fairfield, Connecticut-based non-profit in the US – is formally known as Save The Children Federation, Inc. and is part of the Save the Children Alliance (a group of 30 Save the Children groups throughout the world that also support Save the Children International). Established in 1932, Save the Children is a 501 (c) (3) and one of the most well-known charities in the world.
There are 31 voting members (trustees) of the governing body, 30 of whom are independent, although the Form 990 lists 38 (which appears to be due to timing differences), of whom 18 are female and 20 are male (note: The Form 990 does not disclose gender; determinations were made based on name and google searches). Where Does $100 to Save The Children Go (2020)?
The Save the Children Fund is one of the most recognizable charitable organizations in the world. Established more than a hundred years ago in 1919, the organization is legally known as Save the Children Federation, Inc. in the United States, but is often simply referred to as “Save the Children.”
On the Save the Children website (www.savethechildren.org), the organization reports that “85% of all expenditures went to program services” with the key word being “expenditures.” Expenses are normally analyzed as a percentage of revenue, not as a percentage of total expenditures because both parts of the equation – revenue and expenses – are important to understand how an organization is operating. Toys for Tots is one of the most well known organizations whose mission is to work with the US Marine Corp to collect new unwrapped toys and distribute those toys to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas time. A non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) 3, Toys for Tots is legally known as Marine Toys for Tots Foundation but nearly everyone refers to the organization as “Toys for Tots.”
There are 13 voting members of the governing party, 12 of whom are independent. 9 of the 13 (69%) directors are male while 4 (31%) are female.
So, if you made a donation in 2020, where did it go? It depends. If you donated a toy, then more than likely, a child received that toy.
