Executive Compensation at the Robin Hood Foundation (2018)

The Robin Hood Foundation (RHF) – a 501 (c) (3) based in New York City – is an organization that primarily awards grants to organizations fighting poverty by providing food, shelter, and healthcare and by helping people lift themselves out of poverty. They do this primarily by awarding grants (in 2018, the organization collected $133 million in revenue and awarded $173 million in grants – $40 million more than the organization raised).

Executive Compensation at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Go?

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE – pronounced “I Triple E”) is a non-profit tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) – a professional association for electrical and electronic engineers that serves the public good through its scientific and education (making their work available on a non-discriminatory basis (note:  a 501 (c) (6) serves an industry – not the public – and does not need to make their work available to the public in a non-discriminatory basis).

Where Does $100 to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Go?

Where Does $100 to the Americas Society (AS) Go?

The Americas Society is a non-profit tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) headquartered on Park Avenue on the Upper East Side in New York City, NY. Described as an organization dedicated to education, dialogue and debate on economic, social, and political issues that affect the Americas (United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean), the Americas Society appears to be a cultural center.

So what does that really mean? It means the Americas Society organizes exhibitions, readings, interviews, speeches, concerts, performances, reports, and more at its headquarters, which is a building on the National Register of Historical Places. Executive Compensation at Goodwill (2018)

Goodwill Industries was established in 1902 and is widely known across the country as the place where people donate clothing and household goods to help others.

There are 157 Goodwill Industries agencies (community-based and autonomous) and more than 3,300 retail stores in the US and 12 other countries that generate about $5 billion in revenue annually. Goodwill Industries International, Inc (Goodwill) is the executive member association organization that provides oversight, support, expertise, grants, and products to local agencies (each is a separate 501 (c) (3)) that operates independently but who collectively pay membership dues (revenue) to support Goodwill. There are dozens of Goodwill Industries organizations, each of whom have a CEO whose compensation is substantial. Executive Compensation at Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is a non-profit tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) based out of New York City. Dedicated to protecting human rights around the world, HRW investigates human rights abuses, exposes the facts of the investigations, and presses for changes. As such, HRW is a staff intensive organization (318 employees in 2018) whose employees were compensated $48 million, which equates to an average compensation of $151,000. How Membership Dues are Spent at the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA)

The Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) is a non-profit 501 (c) (5) – an agricultural, horticultural, or labor organization. As such, revenue is supposed to be derived primarily through membership dues which are based on the number of cattle ($120:  less than 100 head; $370:  up to 500 head; $620: up to 1,000 head, etc). Although these dues are not tax deductible at the federal level, the organization reports that 92% of the dues – the portion not directly allocated to lobbying – are deductible as a business expense. Where Does $100 to RIP Medical Debt Go?

Most recently, the national news has given quite a bit of airtime to a non-profit known as RIP Medical Debt, calling the organization out for doing good deeds like paying off medical bills for people unable to settle these debts. Seems RIP Medical Debt has been acquiring bad debt (debt sent to collection agencies) for pennies and paying off that debt thereby erasing a person’s obligation to pay accumulated medical bills.

Established in 2014 by two former debt collection executives, RIP Medical Debt was created to collect donations to buy large bundles of medical debt and then forgive that debt with no tax consequences (although the donor making the donation to RIP Medical Debt gets the deduction). Read more »
