Executive Compensation at Wounded Warriors (2022)
The Wounded Warrior Project is one of the most well-known tax-exempt non-profit charitable organizations focused on rebuilding the lives of wounded veterans. Established in 2003, the Wounded Warrior Project (Wounded Warrior) is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida with about 900 employees. A 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, their mission is to “honor and empower wounded warriors.”
There are 13 independent voting members (directors) of the governing body although 15 are listed on the Form 990 (2021 for the year ending September 30, 2022) which appears to be due to timing differences. 9 directors (60%) are male and 6 (40%) are female.
Key factors to know about Wounded Warrior include:
- In 2022, Wounded Warrior reported total revenue of $402 million (compared to $339 million in 2021, $287 million in 2020 and $282 million in 2019), most of which came from contributions, gifts, and grants.
- Expenses totaled $344 million in 2022, with 55% ($222 million) of revenue spent on compensation, office, fees, advertising and promotion, direct response (mail, tv, and online), and other expenses.
- $51 million (or 13% of revenue) was spent on grants while $65 million was spent on program and other provider services and events.
- Wounded Warrior did not spend $58 million of revenue and allocated these funds to the general fund.
- Wounded Warrior had net assets of $382 million at year-end September 30, 2022, compared to $390 million at the beginning of the year, with the change primarily due to $65 million in net unrealized losses on investments that was partially offset by the unspent revenue ($58 million).
889 employees were compensated $90 million in 2022, which equates to an average compensation of $101,000. 151 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation with the 13 most highly compensated listed below:

You all should be ashamed of yourselves. I’m not giving you another dime.
Do you actually look at the victims you’re supposed to serve?????
you are all making far to much! Your over paid by 50%!
I’m not giving another 1.00 to pay your over blown pay.
I give a small 20.00 per month and that’s a sacrifice for me! Shame on you all executives! It’s a non profit!
Jay
Why do these employees make so much money?
I have no idea that non-profits compensate the directors and non key employees so well. The average compensation for the non essential employees is $100 million. I guess We know why it’s a non-profit!!!
it’s such a shame that CEO Getting over $330 million, WHAT THE Hell!!! I wanted to check to see how much money the the veterans were actually going to be getting and I was so shocked when I looked at the CEOCOOCFO’s all kinds of CO’s making and I was just blown away. It’s pathetic. These men and women go overseas and they come home without arms legs. Parts of their brains are gone faces are gone and you all sit back and gather all this money and I’m sure you justified well no way and who is getting hurt those that needed the money to get the help that they need.
Why is it when I go to the WWP website they say 100% goes to wounded worriers? That sounded suspicious to me. Are these 151 employees counting themselves as “wounded warriors” ? Morally wounded perhaps.
Wow all that money that is making off of military men and women that got injured and you guys are getting paid alot of money off there injuries. If you really cared for them don’t you think most of that money should go to the military men and women. Save money on making blankets that I have seen in a thrift store. As a ex military wife don’t you think all that money that’s going in your pockets could be used to get most of the men and women off the streets. This is so sad to see money going into your pockets. Sounds greedy. My ex is on the streets and having drug problem and he served 20 years in and was injured during the war. This is very disturbing.
And don’t forget these money grabbing officials of Wounded Warriors also get VA benefits including medical, and a military pension !!!
It’s still important to read how Tunnel to Towers spends revenue (and how they don’t as they have accumulated hundreds of millions of dollars):
It is ridiculous How much these people make! I checked out tunnel to towers, and they are an absolutely incredible nonprofit. If you check their salaries, they all are very low and I think the CEO doesn’t take any money from it at all!!!
TUNNEL TO TOWERS is legit and in it solely for the veteran!!!
l don’t understand why, a non-profit, for our hero’s are being paid a 6 digit salary while our veterines are the ones who’s lives have been destroyed. You people are like magnets, eating off the disabled. It’s a crying shame. I hope you are all proud of yourselves.
In the past I have donated to this organization and received the Wounded Warriors blanket. I felt like this was a decent program, but after seeing the money that the upper management is receiving, I will not contribute again.
I am a disabled veteran from Vietnam and not even a 100% rating.
Most “CHARITIES” are just like this. I worked with “FEED THE CHILDREN” 25 Years ago. To my knowledge they were one, if not the only one, that put 95% on the funds received toward the program it was intended.
They are not acting like Democrats – shame on you for associating greed with a political party. Greed does not start and stop at one political party line.
I am the son of an 98 year old WWII survivor and the stepson of an Army Air Corps POW at Omori the last 5 months of WWII.
All of you should be in jail for theft and/or fraud/material misrepresentation, given the amount of money you make for your “volunteerism.” I had no idea until I did a little research.
You’re killing the vets by stealing from them. 91% of donations going to the vets is BS.
You’re acting like Democrats.
I always check the salary of those in such organizations, I could not donate to such a organization with salary such as this. I think it is shameful.
The salaries of the employees of WWP are a shameful example of non-profit abuse. Do not contribute to this scam.
Will never give money to a charity organization that has that many executives making 6 figures
SCPO U.S. Navy Retired
that’s bullshit. I’m not giving a fucking dime to make milonairs.
you all get paid too much. You’re taking a lot of money away from the wounded warriors. That’s not yours. I know you work for it but hundred thousand dollars is too much a year.
I highly recommend you read the Form 990 for T2T – below is a link to the summary:
In short, $23 out of every $100 went to admin and general expenses while $71 out of every $100 was spent on grants and programs, with the remaining revenue allocated to the general fund. Incidentally, T2T has accumulated more than $200 million in net assets by year-end 2022 (in 2020, net assets were $21 million and they did this primarily by saving donations as opposed to using the funds for grants or programs).
We are contributors to WW but after reading we will give our money elsewhere. T2T says that 91% of the donations they receive go to the men and women they are trying to help. Many of the staff T2T are volunteers.
I asmany others had no idea people who wirk this program receive exec salaries@ im appalled! Cut those salaries by 50% at least… we have 40000 Vets homeless! Use some if that intake for facilities to temp house them n feed them…they have nothing..many have been wounded and no Help from the VA!
After reviewing your executive pay scale, how do you guys live with yourselves? Shame on you all.
You’ll find this same thing with most charity organizations. They attach themselves to some other wise worthy cause, and use people associated with that cause, such as Veterans, children, animals, etc…to touch the hearts and minds of possible donors and convince them to contribute their hard earned money. The millions they collect line the pockets of executives and administrators, with very little actually reaching the cause they’re promoting!
people have got too start checking these charities!!!! These salaries are disgraceful! To watch commercials with big stars and sad voices is worse!!!! How much are THEY paid…in the end we will all answer to a much higher power for me that is God!!! SO DISAPPOINTING!
It appears to me that when there is lost revenue through investments the top executives ought to take a pay cut instead of off setting losses with monies that were collected and un spent. These losses come out of donated monies meant for Veterans. Not top Executives.
I find that the compensation of senior executives is too much for the program overall contributions. I’d like to see more of the funding go to the warriors.
Non profit my ass!! On top of all the greed has anyone paid attention to all the donations that’s put into the extra large dumpsters out back of these stores? Peoples donations straight in the trash. And they will put you in jail in some areas for retrieving their “trash”. Which is perfectly usable items !
