Executive Compensation at Carle Health Care, Carle Foundation Hospital, and Carle Foundation (2022)
Carle Health is a vertically integrated healthcare system (health insurance, medical care, education, and research) with 8 hospitals and group practices that employ more than 1,300 physicians and nearly 17,000 workers in Illinois, Indiana, Washington, and North Carolina. Carle Health also encompasses a medical school (Carle Illinois College of Medicine at Methodist College) and a research Institute (Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute).
Based in Urbana, Illinois, Carle Health consists of a dozen tax-exempt organizations and 14 related organizations taxed as a partnership, corporation, or trust. This post will report the executive compensation as reported on three tax-exempt non-profits: Carle Health Care, Carle Foundation Hospital (its flagship hospital in Urbana, IL), and the Carle Foundation (the parent company). A brief synopsis of these three organizations is summarized as follows:
Carle Health Care (CHC)
CHC is a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation with about 2,000 employees. In 2022, total revenue was reported to be $315 million, most of which came from patient service and programs ($309 million). Expenses were $448 million with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($359 million), internal management fees ($40 million), and fees for services ($25 million). The organization ended 2022 with net assets of -$16 million,
Carle Foundation Hospital (CFH)
CFH is a 433 bed regional care Trauma 1 hospital in Urbana, IL with about 5,200 employees. In 2022, total revenue was $1.25 billion, most of which came from patient care (net). Expenses totaled $1.1 billion with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($347 million), patient care supplies ($273 million), internal management fees ($203 million), office-related expenses ($74 million), and fees for services ($136 million). The organization had $243 million in net assets at the end of 2022.
Carle Foundation (CF)
CF is the parent organization of the health care system with about 2,900 employees. In 2022, total revenue was $482 million, most of which came from management fees ($358 million) from related organizations, investment income/gains ($49 million), and rent from related organizations ($63 million). Expenses totaled $475 million (including $64 million of depreciation) with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($210 million), office-related expenses ($96 million), fees for services ($54 million), interest ($37 million), and grants ($3 million), Net assets were $1.8 billion (compared to $2.1 billion in 2021; the result (primarily) of unrealized losses on investments.
