Executive Compensation at the JDRF (2022)

JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is a tax-exempt non-profit based in New York City.  Overseen by 15 voting members (board members) of the governing body (board), the JDRF raises about $240 million annually ($239 million, $223 million, $213 million, and $239 million in 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2019, respectively).

Although JDRF touts itself as the “leading global organization funding Type 1 diabetes research,” $241 million was allocated to the general fund while $259 million was allocated to research grants over the past 4 years:

  • In 2022, JDRF reported total revenue of $239 million and awarded $72 million in grants while allocating $76 million to the general fund
  • In 2021, JDRF reported total revenue of $223 million and awarded $29 million in grants while allocating $127 million to the general fund ;
  • In 2020, JDRF reported total revenue of $213 million and awarded $69 million in grants while allocating $18 million to the general fund; and
  • In 2019, JDRF reported total revenue of $239 million and awarded $89 million in grants while allocating $20 million to the general fund.

In 2022, the largest expense for JDRF was compensation.  496 employees received $57 million in compensation which equates to an average compensation of $115,000 (this compares to an average compensation of $71,000 in 2021).  151 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation with the 14 most highly compensated reported to be:

The 14 most highly compensated employees received $6 million in 2022.  9 of the 14 (64%) are male while 5 of the 14 (36%) are female.  The 10 most highly compensated employees received more than $10 million in compensation from 2020-2022 (and several of these employees were not at the organization in 2020 or 2021):

  • $1.2 million:  Blackbaud, of Charleston, SC for software services
