Executive Compensation at Samaritan’s Purse (2022)

by Anne Paddock

Samaritan’s Purse is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) established in 1970 by Bob Pierce who died in 1978. W. Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham) became Chairman, President, and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse in 1979 and has held the position since although he is also an evangelist for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Based in Boone, North Carolina, Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational Christian organization that provides “spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.”  How do they do this?  Primarily through grants (i.e. transporting shoebox gifts:  a box filled with toys, supplies, and hygiene items) which for the past few years average 27% of revenue because Samaritan’s Purse focused on strengthening their balance sheet by increasing savings and to do this they spent significantly less than they collected:  Samaritan’s Purse has spent about 70% of revenue over the past few years which allowed them to put $250-$330 million annually into savings or $850 million over the past three years so that by year-end 2022, Samaritan’s Purse had $1.5 billion in net assets.

In 2022, Samaritan’s Purse reported total revenue of $1.3  billion (compared to $1 billion in 2021, $894 million in 2020, $734 million in 2019 and $700 million in 2018) most of which came from cash contributions ($933 million), non-cash contributions ($312 million) and government grants ($48 million). Non-cash contributions were primarily shoe box items.

Expenses totaled $891 million (including $28 million in depreciation) –  with the two largest expenses reported to be grants ($375 million) and compensation ($208 million).

4,789 employees received $208 million in  compensation, which equates to an average compensation of $44,000.  231 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation with the 14 most highly compensated reported to be:

I currently volunteer with the American Red Cross and am certified in several of their services but I find myself not agreeing with several of their policies and most of the missions I’ve been deployed to Samaritan’s Purse was deployed to the same places.

I am a Christian and after reading your policies my convictions more closely align with your and wold like to receive information on switching from Red Cross to a Samaritan’s Purse volunteer.

Thank You For All You Do
