Executive Compensation at Save the Children (2023)

Save the Children – the Fairfield, Connecticut-based non-profit in the US – is formally known as Save The Children Federation, Inc. and is part of the Save the Children Alliance (a group of 30 Save the Children groups throughout the world that also support Save the Children International).  Established in 1932, Save the Children is a 501 (c) (3) and one of the most well-known charities in the world.

There are 32 voting members (trustees) of the governing body (Save The Children Federation, Inc), 31 of whom are independent, according to the 2023 Form 990, although 36 are listed with 20 females and 16 males (note:  The Form 990 does not disclose gender; determinations were made based on name and google searches).

In 2023, Save the Children raised 919 million (including $482 million in government grants)  and spent $957 million – primarily on grants ($676 million or 74% of revenue) – mostly overseas, staff compensation and benefits ($145 million), fees for services ($69 million), office-related expenses ($23 million), and advertising and promotion ($22 million).

1,280 employees received $145 million in compensation, which equates to an average compensation of $113,000.  However, only 403 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation.

The 25 most highly compensated employees received $9 million in compensation.  15 of the 25 (60%) are female while 10 of the 25 (40%) are male.

81 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation. The 5 most highly compensated were reported to be:

  • $7.5 million:  TV Fundraising Solutions, of Lanham, MD for digital media
  • $7.0 million:  Salesforce, of San Francisco, CA for CRM consulting
  • $4.2 million:  Production Solutions, of Vienna, VA for mailings
  • $4.0  million:  Google, of Mountain View, CA, for digital ads
  • $2.5  million:  Dialogue Direct, of NY, NY for digital fundraising

As listed above, $28 million was paid to 5 vendors for fundraising and advertising.
