Where Does $100 to the Heritage Foundation Go (2023)?

The Heritage Foundation (Heritage) is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization staffed by conservative “experts” who provide advice on political, economic, social, and financial problems in the United States. Based in Washington, DC Heritage raises about $100 million annually, spends less than they raise and therefore has about $330 million in net fund assets.  Specifically, Heritage is well known for publishing Project 2025 – a controversial “roadmap for how to replace the rule of law with right-wing ideals” according to the ACLU.

There are 17 voting members of the governing body, 16 of whom are independent of which 13 (76%) are male while 4 (24%) are female. Read more »

Executive Compensation at the National Association of Home Builders

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is a trade association – a 501 (c) 6 – that represents the home building industry.  With an estimated 140,000 members among 700 sate and local associations, NAHB is based in Washington, DC and has 76 voting members on its governing board, 71 of whom are independent (although 125 directors are listed on the 2023 Form 990;  111 (89%) of whom are male while 14 (11%) are female). 40 Employees at Mass General Brigham Received $240 Million in Compensation

Mass General Brigham (formerly known as Partners HealthCare) is a non-profit, tax-exempt healthcare provider with 16 member institutions that include hospitals, medical centers, urgent and emergency care facilities, community health centers, physician and rehabilitation networks, a teaching organization, health insurance plan, and more in the Boston area who changed its name to Mass General Brigham (taking the name of two premier hospitals: Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s) in November, 2019.

With an estimated 90,000 employees (including 6,500 physicians and 9,100 registered nurses), Mass General Brigham is the largest private employer and healthcare provider in Massachusetts. The Mass General Brigham healthcare network has dozens of related and affiliated tax-exempt organizations and several taxable as a corporation, partnership, or trust (see Schedule R of the Form 990’s). 25 Executives at Endeavor Health Take Home $200 Million in Compensation

25 of the most highly compensated employees of Endeavor Health, a health care provider that united 8 regional hospitals and 300 care centers across Chicago through NorthShore, Edward-Elmhurst Health, Northwest Community Healthcare, and Swedish Hospital creating the third largest healthcare system in the State of Illinois in 2022, received $200 million in compensation* from 2017-2023 (note:  highly compensated employees in any of the years 2017-2022 but not in 2023 are not included below. If they were included, both the number of employees and the amount would increase).  With more than 27,000 employees, Endeavor Health is made up of 19 tax-exempt organizations, 9 organizations taxable as partnerships, and 12 organizations taxable as corporations or trusts. Executive Compensation at Ascension Health (2023)

Ascension Health is the nation’s largest Catholic non-profit health system with 140 hospitals, 2,600 sites of care, and 39 senior living facilities in 19 states and the District of Columbia. The sole corporate member of Ascension Health is Ascension Health Alliance, a Missouri non-profit 501 (c) (3).  In addition, there is Ascension Health -IS, Inc who provides information technology support to the network organizations.   Consequently, there are three separate IRS Form 990’s that need to be viewed to gain an understanding of the executive compensation. $250 Million in Legal Fees at the NRA

The NRA has been embroiled in litigation for years with multiple legal charges and actions including corruption, tax fraud, mismanagement, bankruptcy, illegal campaign conduct, and other legal issues.  To defend against the charges (and other minor suits), the NRA used revenue (primarily membership dues and contributions) and relied on accumulated funds in the general fund to pay $250 million in legal fees over the past decade (although the bulk of the legal fees were paid between 2018-2023).
