40 Employees at Mass General Brigham Received $240 Million in Compensation
Mass General Brigham (formerly known as Partners HealthCare) is a non-profit, tax-exempt healthcare provider with 16 member institutions that include hospitals, medical centers, urgent and emergency care facilities, community health centers, physician and rehabilitation networks, a teaching organization, health insurance plan, and more in the Boston area who changed its name to Mass General Brigham (taking the name of two premier hospitals: Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s) in November, 2019.
With an estimated 90,000 employees (including 6,500 physicians and 9,100 registered nurses), Mass General Brigham is the largest private employer and healthcare provider in Massachusetts. The Mass General Brigham healthcare network has dozens of related and affiliated tax-exempt organizations and several taxable as a corporation, partnership, or trust (see Schedule R of the Form 990’s).
This post addresses the executive compensation reported on two (2) Form 990’s (2023):
- Mass General Brigham Inc and Affiliates Group Return; and
- Mass General Brigham, Inc
Mass General Brigham Inc and Affiliates Group Return: Key Information
- Total revenue was $23 billion, most of which came from patient care revenue ($13 billion), contributions and gifts ($5 billion), other program revenue ($2 billion), government grants ($1 billion), related organizations ($575 million), and investment income, gains, net rental income and royalties ($269 million).
- Expenses totaled $22 billion with the largest expenses reported to be: compensation ($10 billion), miscellaneous expenses with no detail ($3 billion), office expenses ($4 billion), and fees for outside services ($2 billion).
- Net assets were nearly $18 billion at year-end – a $2 billion increase from the beginning of the year, which is primarily attributable to two items: spending less than total revenue ($1.1 billion) and unrealized gains on investments ($1 billion).
- 90,812 employees received $10 billion in compensation which equates to an average compensation of $110,000. 20,368 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation.
Mass General Brigham, Inc: (the administrative non-profit (whose revenue derives from related and affiliated organizations for managing the whole network) Key information:
- Total revenue was $2.1 billion (compared to $2.1 billion in 2022), most of which came from three sources: related organizations ($564 million), administrative fees ($1.3 billion) – both of which appear to come from organizations within the Mass General Brigham health system; and gains on the sale of assets and investment income ($185 million);
- Expenses totaled $2.1 billion (including $75 million in depreciation), most of which came from 6 categories of expenses: compensation ($990 million), interest ($229 million), office-related expenses ($232 million), fees for services ($174 million), and grants ($161 million, most of which was awarded to affiliated organizations for support); and
- Net assets are $1.6 billion – compared to a $881 million at the beginning of the year — which is a huge increase primarily attribute to a $700 million adjustment to net assets related to changes in the defined benefit plan and non-service related pension income.
