Executive Compensation at Geisinger

Geisinger is a large integrated healthcare system with an estimated 24,000 employees working in 10 hospitals and numerous medical care facilities that primarily serve the central and northeastern Pennsylvania region.  Acquired by Risant Health, Geisinger is now a part of Kaiser Permanente (who counts Risant Health as a subsidiary).

In 2023, Geisinger was made up of many organizations:  20 tax-exempt entities, 11 taxable partnerships, and 13 taxable corporations or trusts.  These organizations contribute to an organization called Geisinger System Services who provides overall management services to the organizations that makeup Geisinger Health.  In 2023, these organizations paid nearly $800 million to Geisinger System Services, who spent most of that revenue on compensation ($404 million), office-related expenses ($160 million), and fees for outside services ($150 million).

4,529 employees at Geisinger System Services received $404 million in compensation or an average of $89,000.  692 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation with 23 of the most highly compensated employees reported to be:

  • $1,588,172:  Dominic Moffa, EVP, Chief Strategy Officer
  • $1,255,549:  Steven B Bender, EVP, CLO, Secretary
  • $  972,094:  Janet F Tomcavage, EVP, CHF, Nursing Ex
  • $  942,390:  Gerald V Maloney, Director*
  • $  900,958:  Gregory G Shuler, Chief Investment Officer
  • $  888,668:  Spencer Kowal, CFO, Clinical Ent.

23 of the most highly compensated employees listed above received $30 million in compensation in 2023.  The most highly compensated employee was Jaewon Ryu who received $7 million in 2023 and $29 million from 2018-2023:

Geisinger System Services made gross up payments or provided ax indemnifications.  In addition, the organization made a $50,000 loan to Mike Angelakos for “recruitment.” The Curren balance due is $20,019.  In addition, a $30,000 loan was made to Sean Koenig, also for “recruitment.”  The balance due is $18,651.

304 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation with the five (5) most highly compensated reported to be:

  • $46 million:  Alvin H Butz, of Allentown, PA for construction services
  • $32 million:  Deloitte Consulting, of Dallas, TX for professional services
  • $18 million:  Microsoft Corp, of Dallas, TX for software services
  • $16 million:  Vision Media, of Bellevue, WA for professional services
  • $16 million:  Riverside Technologies, of Omaha, NE for IT services

In summary, the non-profits, partnerships, trusts, and corporations that make up Geisinger Health pay nearly $800 million to one of their own organizations to manage themselves in 2023.  More than half of that revenue (about $400 million) was paid to about 4,600 employees for compensation in 2023.  $30 million was paid to 23 employees of Geisinger System Services in 2023.
