The American Medical Association (AMA) is a non-profit 501 (c) (6) – a professional association and the largest association of physicians – whose primary purpose is to:

  • publish the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) – a peer reviewed medical journal that includes original research, reviews, and editorials of medicine;
  • maintain a code of medical ethics,
  • create and maintain physician data which is sometimes referred to as master files; and
  • update and maintain medical classification codes (referred to as CPT codes) used by the government, medical practices, hospitals, and insurance companies in return for royalty fees.

Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 who “collects charitable donations on behalf of the soldiers of the IDF” in Israel. Based in New York City, FIDF has 20 offices in the United States and Panama with a remarkable ability to not only raise funds but to accumulate nearly $300 million in net assets. Recently criticized for embarking on a major fundraising effort following the October 7, 2023 massacre in Israel sparking a war in the Gaza Strip, FIDF claims the $174 million in net assets has been earmarked for other causes but the growth in net assets from $174 million in 2022 to $288 million in 2023 means a substantial amount of funds were saved rather than spent. Executive Compensation at PBS (2023)

PBS (Public Broadcasting System) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) television program distributer and broadcaster of educational television content through its 153 member public television licensees.

In 2023, PBS reported total revenue of $544 million (which is consistent with previous years). However, $165 million were non-cash contributions of donated broadcast rights which means total cash revenue was $379 million, most of which came from membership dues and contributions, gifts, and grants. Executive Compensation at NPR (2023)

NPR (National Public Radio) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization that serves as a national syndicator to about 800 public radio stations through its member stations. Headquartered in Washington, DC, NPR strives to keep the public informed of events, ideas, and cultures through its programming.

In 2023, NPR raised $302 million (compared to $306 million in 2022), primarily from program services  and contributions, gifts, and grants. Expenses totaled $308 million (not including $8 million in depreciation) with the largest expense being compensation. 1,508 employees were compensated $194 million, which equates to an average compensation of $129,000. Where Does $100 to NPR Go (2023)?

NPR (National Public Radio) – the radio station that people love to love – is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization that works with its member stations to foster a more informed public by providing a deeper understanding of events, ideas, and cultures.

Based in Washington, DC, NPR is also noteworthy for its on air fundraising although most people would be surprised to learn that public support in the form of contributions, gifts, and grants is not the number one source of revenue. Instead, program service revenue (station programming fees, digital media sponsorships, membership dues from member stations, distribution, and digital services) is the primary source of revenue for NPR followed by contributions, gifts, and grants.

Executive Compensation at the American Federation of Teachers (2023)

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is the second largest teacher’s union (although membership is not limited to teachers) with 1.8 million members (after the National Education Association) in 3,000 local affiliates in the USA. A non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (5), the AFT is based in Washington, DC and is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.

For the year ending June 30, 2023, AFT reported total revenue of  $211 million (mostly from membership dues) and expenses of $220 million (with the shortfall covered by the general fund). The largest expense for the organization was compensation for the 354 employees who received $64 million, which equates to an average compensation of $181,000.
