Executive Compensation at America’s Health Insurance Plans, Inc (2023)
AHIP (America’s Health Insurance Plans, Inc) is one of those non-profits that most people haven’t heard of outside the healthcare lobbying world because the tax-exempt, non-profit organization is a 501 (c) 6 – a trade organization – whose members are health care insurance coverage providers (insurance companies) who claim the organization is “committed to market-based solutions and public-private partnerships that make high quality coverage and care more affordable, accessible, and equitable for everyone.” Sounds noble but I don’t know anyone who feels high quality care and coverage is affordable, accessible, and equitable for everyone.
AHIP raises about $90 million annually with most revenue predictably coming from memberships dues ($52 million), educational programs ad engagemet alliances($26 million), and conference sponsorship and registration ($10 million). Expenses are generally the same as revenue (although the organization has accumulated nearly $25 million in net assets) with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($33 million), fees for services – primarily lobbying and consultants- ($28 million), travel and conferences ($8 million), office-related expenses ($8 million), and education and advocacy ($7 million).
152 employees received $33 million in compensation, which equates to an average compensation of $217,000. However, only 95 employees received more than $100,000 annually which means there were some very highly compensated employees. AHIP reported 12 of the most highly compensated employees received between $400,000 – $3 million in compensation in 2023:
- $2,892,767: Matthew Eyles, President and CEO (thru 9/23)
- $ 864,945: John Mathewson, Chief Operating Officer
- $ 791,688: Julie Miller, General Counsel/Secretary, Interim CEO (beg 10/23)
- $ 680,236: Jeanette Thornton, EVP
- $ 626,991: Thomas Amontree, EVP
- $ 615,328: Mark Hamelburg, SVP
- $ 548,449: Dawn Eshelman, CFO
- $ 486,905: Aron Griffin, SVP
- $ 455,904: Michael Spector, Deputy GC and Interim GC (beg 10/23)
- $ 446,721: Miranda Motter, SVP
- $ 438,113: Robert Traynham, EVP (beg 4/23)
- $ 434,157: Sohini Gupta, EVP (beg 4/23)
The 12 employees listed above received more than $9 million in compensation in 2023. Mathew Eyles, who was President and CEO thru September, 2023 was the most highly compensated employee who received nearly $3 million in compensation in 2023 and more than $11 million from 2018-2023:
Matthew Eyles: Total Compensation 2018-2023: $11 million
- 2023: $2,892767
- 2022: $2,199,573
- 2021: $2,008,399
- 2020: $1,679,550
- 2019: $1,438,985
- 2018: $ 957,718
AHIP made gross up payments or provided tax indemnification.
65 independent contractors were received more than $100,000 in compensation. The five most highly compensated were reported to be:
- $10 million: Global Strategy Group, of NY, NY for advocacy
- $ 5 million: Locust Street Group, of Washington, DC f0r advocacy
- $ 4 million: Forj Software Group, of Waukesha, WI for learning management system services
- $ 1 million: Diligent Heath Solutions, of Chesterfield, VA for insurance education call center
- $ 1 million: Plus Communications, of Arlington, VA for advocacy
More than $16 million was paid to three organizations for advocacy (which appears to be lobbying).
In summary, AHIP is a trade organization for health insurance companies. With a revenue stream of $90 million annually, AHIP spends most revenue on advocating or hiring organizations to advocate on behalf of its members: health insurance companies. Employees are highly compensated with the average annual compensation over $200,000 in 2023, although the President and CEO received nearly $3 million in compensation in 2023 before he departed in September, 2023.
