Executive Compensation at BJC Healthcare (2024)

BJC Healthcare (whose legal name is BJC Health System) is one of the largest non-profit healthcare providers in the country with 14 hospitals and multiple community health locations in Missouri and Illinois.

BJC Healthcare consists of dozens of affiliated non-profits and taxable partnerships, trusts, and corporations but the one that encompasses most of the employees of the network is the BJC Health System Group Return (2019) – hereafter referred to as BJC – which shows the organization reported $11.3 billion in revenue (most of which came from the provision of healthcare) and $10.6 billion in expenses (with the 2 largest expenses being compensation ($4 billion) and medical supplies ($2 billion).

BJC has nearly $6 billion in net assets.

Governed by 418 voting members (of whom 266 are independent) referred to as directors, of the governing body (board of directors), there are 243 males (58% of the board) and 175 (42%) females.

58,997 employees received $4 billion in compensation in 2024, which equates to an average compensation of $70,000.  10,011 employees received more than $100,000 with the 108 most highly compensated reported to be:

In Schedule L, Transactions with Interested Persons, Part II, a loan of $2.9 million to Rich Liekweg with a balance due to $2.7 million is due.  The purpose of the loan is to fund the purchase of a cash value life insurance policy to supplement executive agreement.

617 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation with the five (5) most highly compensated reported to be:

  • $387 million;  Washington University School of Medicine, of St Louis, MO for medical services
  • $ 58 million:  Cardinal Health, of Dublin, Ohio for medical services
  • $ 39 million:  McCarthy Building Companies, of Overland Park, KS for construction services
  • $ 35 million:  Mid America Transplant Services, of St Louis, MO for procurement of transplants
  • $ 35 million:  McKesson Specialty Distribution, of Irving, TX for medical services
