Executive Compensation at Alliance Defending Freedom (2023)

The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 that is described as a conservative  legal advocacy group that works to curtail rights of LGBTQ people while expanding “christian practices” in public schools and government (who serve all people), and to prevent access to a woman’s right to choose. How do they do this? Primarily through challenges in the legal system and taking on cases that further their mission and goals including the most recent case about a Colorado-based web page designer who “does not want to” (note:  she hasn’t been asked to) create wedding websites for gay couples. 15 Executives Receive $70 million in Compensation at AARP

15 executives of AARP – a tax-exempt, non-profit organization who offers a broad mission:  “to empower people to choose how they live as they age” but more specifically focuses on the issues and benefits of those 50 years and older –  received $70 million in compensation from 2015-2023. AARP – the American Association of Retired Persons – is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization who offers a broad mission:  “to empower people to choose how they live as they age” but more specifically focuses on the issues and benefits of those 50 years and older.  With an estimated 38 million members who pay $15-$20 annually, AARP is one of the largest non-profit member-based organizations in the country. How Revenue is Spent at AARP (2023)

AARP – the American Association of Retired Persons – is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization who offers a broad mission:  “to empower people to choose how they live as they age” but more specifically focuses on the issues and benefits of those 50 years and older.

With an estimated 38 million members who pay $15-$20 annually, AARP is one of the largest non-profit member-based organizations in the country. However, membership dues are not the main source of AARP’s revenue and expenses are not dominated by member services. Instead, AARP relies primarily on royalties for revenue with expenses dominated by compensation and advertising/promotion.

Executive Compensation at the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is a physician-led independent evaluation organization to certify internists and the 20 subspecialties (i.e. infectious disease, cardiovascular, hematology, oncology, etc).  A non-profit, 501 (c) 3, ABIM estimates the organization certifies bout 200,000 physicians or about 1 in 4 physicians in the US.  ABIM is one of 24 medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

As such, ABIM predictably derives most revenue from certification – both certification to establish initial competence and “maintenance of certification” to ensure ongoing competence. Read more »

10 Executives Received $40 Million in Compensation at the National Basketball Players Association

10 employees of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) received $40 million in compensation from 2016-2023 (although several employees were only at NBPA for 1-2 years).  The largest payout was to Michele Roberts, the former chief executive officer who retired in January, 2022 (although she recieved more than $3 million from 2022-2023).  The 10 most highly compensated employees in 2023 include  (note:  highly compensated employees in any of the years 2016-2022 but not in 2023 are not included): Read more »

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 5 – a trade union representing the 450 basketball players (30 teams with 15 players) in the NBA. 10 Employees of Geisinger Received $90 Million in Compensation

10 of the most highly compensated employees of Geisinger Health (a large integrated healthcare system with an estimated 24,000 employees working in 10 hospitals and numerous medical care facilities that primarily serve the central and northeastern Pennsylvania region.  Acquired by Risant Health, Geisinger is now a part of Kaiser Permanente, who counts Risant Health as a subsidiary), received more than $90 million in compensation from 2018-2023: Read more »
