How Hillsdale College Spends Revenue (2022)

Conservative movements to reform education are often defined by what they’re against.

Hillsdale College, a small private liberal arts college with 1,400 students in southern Michigan (Hillsdale) is the college virtually no one heard of 20 years ago.  Founded by abolitionist, Free Will Baptist preachers nearly 200 years ago in 1844, Hillsdale until recently maintained a small word of mouth following among conservatives attracting students (and conservative parents of smart (avg ACT 30-33, mid-range SAT 1350-1490 – 89-96 percentile, mid-range GPA 3.9-4.0) young people) who want a conservative liberal arts education, which is kind of an oxymoron. Tuition, room, board, and fees are about $46,000 annually. Read more »

Executive Compensation at Paralyzed Veterans of America (2023)

The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 based in Washington, DC (although the organization has 73 offices and 33 chapters throughout the country (Note:  the Form 990 reports 33 chapters but the website reports 34 chapters).

Established in 1947, PVA has a core mission of vets serving vets, funding spinal cord research, and advocating for disability rights, according to their website. So, the question most donors want to know is:  how much of my donation goes to the organization’s core mission?  The answer:  about 49% in 2023 with the remainder (58%)  spent on a marketing, publications, and advertising (note:  PVA spent $8 million more than the organization raised in 2023, or $107 for every $100 raised). Since the organization reported $11 million in unrealized gains on investments and had about $100 million in net assets, there was no deterioration in net assets).

The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 based in Washington, DC (although the organization has 73 offices and 33 chapters throughout the country). Established in 1947, PVA has a core mission of vets serving vets, funding spinal cord research, and advocating for disability rights, according to their website. Executive Compensation at the US Chamber of Commerce (2022)

The US Chamber of Commerce (also known as the Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America) is the largest business organization in the United States representing businesses. A tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 6 organization, the US Chamber of Commerce (USCOC) is based in Washington, DC.

The USCOC raised $210 million in 2022 (compared to $204 million in 2021, $230 million in 2020 and $173 million in 2019), primarily from contributions, gifts and grants with only $4 million coming from membership dues).

Expenses totaled $207 million, with the largest expense reported to be compensation followed by fees for services, office-related expenses, and advertising), leaving $3 million allocated to the general fund.  A $16 million adjustment for pension liability allowed USCOC to close the year with $82 million in net assets, compared to $63 million at the beginning of the year.   Read more »

Executive Compensation of the Most Highly Compensated at Advent Health (2022)

AdventHealth (formerly known as Adventist Health System until 2019 when the 501 (c) (3) “rebranded” itself) is one of the largest non-profit health care providers in the United States with more than 50 hospitals and hundreds of care sites in 9 states. Based in Altamonte Springs, Florida, AdventHealth is a very large system with dozens of separate 501 (c) (3)’s for the hospitals, physician care, patient care, and more.

This post looks at the executive compensation at Adventist Health System Sunbelt Healthcare Corporation (AHSSHC), the tax-exempt, non profit organization that provides management, leadership, and oversight to all the subsidiaries so the primary source of income is from the related/affiliated organizations.  It is important to note there are dozens of other related and affiliated non-profits and for profit organizations  related to AdventHealth that are not covered in this post. Executive Compensation at the Girl Scouts (2023)

The Girl Scouts of the United States of America (Girl Scouts) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) based in New York, NY. With more than 2.5 million members (an estimated 1.8 million girl members and about 700,000 member volunteers) the Girl Scouts works to build “courage, confidence, and character” in young girls.

There are 30 independent voting members (board members) of the governing body (board), although 43 are listed on the Form 990 (2022 for the year ending September 30, 2023) due to timing differences – 35 of the 43 (81%) listed are female while 8 of the 29 (19%) are male. Read more »

The Oral Roberts Ministries is legally known as the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association (OREA) – a Tulsa, Oklahoma based non-profit 501 (c) (3) whose “evangelistic mission is to pray for healing of the whole man.”  Established in 1947 by Oral Roberts, a televangelist, OREA is now run by Oral’s son, Richard Roberts, along with his wife, Linda Salem Roberts who also appears to be known as Linda Roberts.  Collectively, Richard and Linda Roberts have received more than $600,000 in compensation annually for years.

There are 11 voting members (trustees) of the governing body, 10 of whom are independent; although 8 are listed on the most recent Form 990:  5 of whom are male, 3 of whom are female.
