America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 6 – a trade organization – representing health insurance companies that profit coverage through employers, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid managed care, and open market plans that provide individual coverage.
A political advocacy group to represent health insurer’s best interests AHIP has been in the news recently because insurers are balking at consumer demand for more transparency on claim denials and health coverage. Given that people paying premiums to the insurance companies ultimately fund membership in AHIP, they have a point.
AHIP is overseen by 33 voting members of the governing body, 32 of whom are independent. 27 of the 33 (82%) board members are male while 6 (18%) are female. Read more

Samaritan’s Purse is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) established in 1970 by Bob Pierce who died in 1978. W. Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham) became Chairman, President, and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse in 1979 and has held the position since although he is also an evangelist for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
Based in Boone, North Carolina, Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational Christian organization that provides “spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.” How do they do this? Primarily through grants (i.e. transporting shoebox gifts: a box filled with toys, supplies, and hygiene items) which for the past few years average 27% of revenue because Samaritan’s Purse focused on strengthening their balance sheet by increasing savings and to do this they spent significantly less than they collected: Samaritan’s Purse has spent about 70% of revenue over the past few years which allowed them to put $250-$330 million annually into savings or $850 million over the past three years so that by year-end 2022, Samaritan’s Purse had $1.5 billion in net assets. The Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association is commonly referred to as the Alzheimer’s Association. A tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 whose goal is to eliminate Alzheimers Disease through research but also offer support, information/public awareness, and education on the disease, the Alzheimer’s Association raised $412 million in 2023 (compared to $502 million in 2022, $405 million in 2021, $403 million in 2020 and $390 million in 2019), primarily from contributions, gifts, and grants ($408 million including $28 million from the government). Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) became one of the largest Catholic healthcare providers serving communities in Ohio, Kentucky, New York, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida when merged with Mercy Health in September, 2018.
A tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare system that consists of nearly 1,400 non-hospital healthcare facilities including 58 tax-exempt organizations, 40 organizations taxable as a partnership, and 48 organizations taxable as a corporation or trust, BSMH reports the net patient revenue from 27 hospitals and other care facilities through BSMH, along with management fees paid to BSMH for network management.
