Mercy Ships is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) headquartered in Lindale, Texas, that operates two hospital ships in developing countries to provide free medical care. Described as a “predominately Christian interdenominational missionary organization, Mercy Ships “treats all patients….without regard to their religions, race, or gender” by navigating the ship to offshore locations.
There are ten voting members (directors) of the governing body, 9 of whom are independent; 9 are male while 1 is female. Read more

Unless you’re a dairy farmer or work in the dairy industry, you may never have heard of Dairy Management, Inc. – a 501 (c) (6) – whose tax-exempt status as a “business league” is one of the most powerful dairy organizations in the country.
Funded by America’s 41,000-plus farmers and dairy importers, Dairy Management’s purpose is to increase demand and sales for dairy products. To do this, dairy farmers pay 15 cents (and dairy importers pay 7.5 cents) for every 100 pounds of milk (a gallon of milk weighs 8.6-11.6 pounds so 100 pounds of milk is roughly 10 gallons, meaning US dairy farmers pay Dairy Management about 1.5 cents per gallon for their services). These funds are used to “fund programs and aimed at promoting dairy consumption and protecting the good image of dairy farmer, dairy products, and the dairy industry.” Read more
Where Does $100 to the American Heart Association Go?
The American Heart Association (AHA) is one of the most popular and recognized non-profits in the United States with enormous public support as evidenced by the $830 million raised last year. That the AHA also has nearly a billion dollars in their net fund balance is also noteworthy.
By most accounts, this organization is a magnet for public contributions and an expert at raising and saving money. But, are they accomplishing their mission, which is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke? With heart disease the number one cause of death in the United States for decades, one has to wonder if all the contributions to the AHA are really helping to prevent and reverse heart disease?
