Executive Compensation at Columbia (2023)

Columbia University (Columbia) reported a very different year in 2023:  after coming off a record year in 2022 when revenue reached an all time high ($7.1 billion) with expenses of  $5.9 billion (including $300 million of depreciation), Columbia reported total revenue of $6.7 billion and expenses of $6.4 billion (including $300 million in depreciation) in 2023.  However, Columbia increased net assets from $18.4 billion to $18.7 billion in 2023 by adding unspent revenue and nearly $150 million in unrealized gains on investments (offset by a negative $80 million adjustment to net assets for “other non-operating adjustments”) to the general fund.

In terms of compensation, 40,081 employees (up by 3,000 since 2022) were compensated $3.9 billion, which equates to an average compensation of $97,000. Executive Compensation at Columbia (2022)

2022 was a record year for Columbia University (Columbia) and many of its employees with total revenue reaching an all time high:  $7.1 billion while expenses totaled $5.6 billion (not including $329 in depreciation).  Although the university’s expenses were more than $1 billion less than total revenue, $2.3 billion in net unrealized losses on investments (2022 was not a great year in the market) caused net assets to decline from $19.6 billion to $18.4 billion at year-end.

Executive Compensation at Columbia (2017)

2017 was a great year for Columbia University (Columbia) and many of its employees. Total revenue reached $5.7 billion while expenses totaled $4.5 billion (not including depreciation) which contributed to the endowment increasing from $13.2 billion to $14.7 billion at year-end, of which only $3.4 billion is permanently restricted.

Executive Compensation at Columbia (2016)

People often joke about the low compensation in academia but many individuals working for non-profit educational institutions (i.e. colleges and universities) receive very high compensation packages. Although the most highly compensated tend to be investment managers for the endowment, presidents, provosts, department chairs, professors, and fundraisers, the overall average compensation package is often nothing to make light of.

At Columbia University (Columbia) – a private, Ivy-League educational and research university on the Upper West Side in New York City (although there are six campuses, five in New York and one in Paris), 34,437 employees were compensated $2.6 billion (or an average of $76,000 each) in the school year beginning July 1, 2015 and ending June 30, 2016. 4,928 individuals received more than $100,000 in total compensation.
