There is a funky little coffee house about 30 miles north of Queens in Northport, New York on the Long Island Sound called Caffe Portofino. Owned by Lisa Harris, a truly passionate baker, Portofino is known for their eclectic menu – whole wheat scones, hearty oatmeal with pecans, walnuts, cranberries, granola, and fresh fruit, smoothies made with milk or soy, and the Morning Sunshine Breakfast Cookie – a scrumptious blend of all natural ingredients – for the health conscious consumer.

The Morning Sunshine Breakfast Cookie is a nutritionally impressive yet delicious “cookie” that can be eaten for breakfast or for a quick snack on the go.With three varieties to choose from – Original, Gluten-free, or Dark Chocolate Flax – the Morning Sunshine Cookie is not too sweet with only 4-6 grams of sugar per cookie. With a whopping 12-16 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber per cookie and fats derived from healthy sources including almonds and sunflower seeds, the breakfast cookie will fill you up but not weigh you down.

Each Morning Sunshine Breakfast Cookie has a sumptuous list of nutritious ingredients:

Original: Organic rolled oats, barley flour, wheat bran, egg whites, agave nectar, barley malt syrup, whole wheat flour, sesame seeds, almonds, dried cranberries, and sunflower seeds.

Gluten-Free:  Organic rolled oats, defatted peanut flour, peanut oil, brown rice flour, cranberries, almonds, flax seeds, dark chocolate chips, agave, sunflower seeds, and sesame seeds.

Dark Chocolate Flax:  Organic rolled oats, barley flour, wheat bran, egg whites, agave nectar, barley malt syrup, dark chocolate chips, flax seeds, sesame seeds, almonds, dried cranberries and sunflower seeds.

The cookies may be purchased directly from the company via the website listed below or through Abe’s Market. The cookies are sold by the dozen (individually wrapped) for about $2 each ($24 for a dozen) for the original and dark chocolate flax varieties.  The gluten-free variety sells for about $2.75 each with a dozen costing about $33. Upon receipt of the cookies, keep one or two and freeze the rest.
