Executive Compensation at the Alzheimer’s Association (2022)

by Anne Paddock

The Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association is commonly referred to as the Alzheimer’s Association. A tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 whose goal is to eliminate Alzheimers Disease through research but also offer support, information/public awareness, and education on the disease, the Alzheimer’s Association raised $502 million (compared to $405 million in 2021, $403 million in 2020 and $390 million in 2019), primarily from contributions, gifts, and grants ($460 million including $27 million from the government).

Expenses totaled $443 million (including $3 million in depreciation)  representing 88% of revenue (the remaining 12% or $59 million was allocated to the general fund – think savings account).

The largest expense for the Alzheimer’s Association is compensation for the 2,276 employees who received $199 million, which equates to an average compensation of $87,000.  340 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation with the 10 most highly compensated employees reported to be:

  • $1,468,534:  Harry Johns, President and CEO (thru 11/2021)
  • $  862,589:  Katherine “Joanne” Pike, President and CEO (as of 11/2021)
  • $  775,175:  Donna McCullough, Chief Missions and Field Operations Officer
  • $  745,891:  Richard Hovland, COO, CFO and Assistant Treasurer
  • $  710,401:  Maria Carrillo, Chief Science Officer
  • $  673,018:  Robert Egge, Chief Public Policy Officer
  • $  585,967:  Glenda Berry, West Area Leader
  • $  582,907:  Kenann Cassidy, East Area Leader
  • $  582,141:  Michelle Helton, Former CFO (thru 5/2021)
  • $  396,249:  Christine Foh, Assistant Secretary and VP Legal, and GC (thru 11/2021)

As illustrated above, the 10 most highly compensated employees received more than $7 million in compensation. 7 of the 10 most highly compensated employees are female while 3 are male. It is also important to point out there are 29 independent directors on the Board of Directors although 32 are listed on the Form 990 (due to timing differences). 19 of the 32 (59%) are male while 13 of the 32 (41%) are female.

Harry Johns, the President and CEO was the most highly compensated employee in 2022 (he departed in November, 2021). Over the past 6 years, Mr Johns received $8 million in compensation:

  • 2022:  1,468,534
  • 2021:  $1,020,006
  • 2020:  $1,352,901
  • 2019:  $1,014,248
  • 2018:  $1,980,687
  • 2017:  $1,118,540

The Alzheimer’s Association paid for companion travel. See the Form 990, Schedule J, Part III, Supplemental Information for more details and for information on retirement plan contributions.

115 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation with the five most highly compensated reported to be:

  • $ 3.0 million:  Blackbaud, of Atlanta, GA for CRM/Technology

As illustrated above, the largest independent contractors were used for direct marketing and advertising:  more than $38 million was paid to 3 independent vendors for these services.

Many folks cannot afford to pay for prescribed medications while the top 10 folks at this association are wallowing in money. I find it very hard to believe you are begging for donations when you could be helping folks buy meds. My wife suffered with Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body for 8 years. There were meds we did not get because of the cost yet I gave you guys several hundred dollars each year—much more than I could afford. Then I found out how much you guys are sucking out of this non-profit in salaries, I have decided to give you nothing in the future. I gave to you for years, yet you did nothing for us–YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED. My wife died in her 8th year
