Executive Compensation at RJW Barnabas Health (2023)

RJW Barnabas Health (RJW Barnabas) is one of the largest integrated health care providers in New Jersey with 42 tax-exempt non-profit organizations, 36 organizations taxed as partnerships, and 18 organizations taxed as a corporation or trust.  Formed in 2016 when the Saint Barnabas Health Network merged with the Robert Wood Johnson Health Network, RJW Barnabas with its 43,000 employees at 15 hospitals and 700 patient care locations serves about 5 million people throughout New Jersey with a concentration in the central and northern part of the state.  

Key financial information includes:

  • In 2023, total revenue was $7.1 billion, most of which came from net patient revenue ($6.7 billion).
  • Expenses totaled $7.2 billion (including $271 million n depreciation) in 2023, with the largest expenses reported to be compensation ($3.7 billion), fees for outside services – primarily management ($1.3 billion) medical supplies ($1.2 billion), and office, repairs and maintenance ($442 million).
  • Net assets were $4.2 billion at year-end (up from $4 billion the previous year) primarily because of a nearly $400 million adjustment to net assets (See the Form 990, Schedule O for details).

38,636 employees received $3.7 billion in compensation which equates to an average compensation of a $96,000 (note:  $117 million was also paid to US Nursing Corp,an independent contractor, for staffing). 7,278 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation with 55 of the most highly compensated reported to be:

Collectively, the 55 employees listed above received $61 million in compensation in 2023.  39 of the 55 (71%) are male while 16 of the 55 (29%) are female.

425 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation in 2023.  The five (5) most highly compensated were reported to be:

  • $802 million:  RWJBH Corporate Services, of Oceanport, NJ for management
  • $117 million:  US Nursing Corp, of Greenwood Village, CO for staffing
  • $ 67 million:  Rutgers University, of Piscataway, NJ for medical
  • $ 63 million:  WM Blanchard Company, of Springfield, NJ for construction
  • $ 39 million:  SODEXO, of Pittsburgh, PA for food management

It is interesting to note RJW Barnabas paid more than $800 million in 2023 for management.
