Executive Compensation at Aurora Health Care (2024)

Aurora Health Care (AHC) is a health care provider for 30 communities in eastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois with 18 hospitals, more than 150 clinics, and 70 pharmacies (note: In 2018, Aurora Health Care merged with Advocate Health Care of Illinois to form Advocate Aurora Health. And in 2022, Advocate Aurora Health and Atrium Health combined to create Advocate Health, the third-largest nonprofit integrated health system in the U.S.).  The entire system is referred to as Advocate Health and geographically is divided as follows:

  • Aurora Health Care (AHC):  serves Wisconsin and northern Illinois
  • Advocate Health:  serves Illinois
  • Atrium Health:  serves the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama

This post addresses the executive compensation at AHC.

The most recent IRS Form 990 (2024) reports the organization – a 501 (c) (3) based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin – reported total revenue of $7.4 billion, almost all of which came from “program services.”

Expenses totaled $6.9 billion (including $187 million in depreciation) concentrated in three areas: compensation ($3.8 billion), medical and other supplies ($1.1 billion), and other expenses with no detail provided ($1 billion). AHC  had $486 million in excess revenue in 2024 which contributed to the organization’s ability to increase the net assets or fund balance from $6.9 billion in the beginning of the year to $7.3 billion at year-end.

In 2024, AHC employed 34,433 employees who were compensated $3.8 billion, which equates to an average compensation of $110,000.  78 of the most highly compensated employees reported include:
