How the Metropolitan Museum of Art Spends Revenue (2021)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (“Met”) is the largest art museum in the US with more than 2 million works of art curated over 17 departments and displayed at 2 locations in New York:  The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters that collectively report more than 1 million visitors a year

A tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3), the Met is governed by 50 voting members (trustees) of the governing body, 48 of whom are independent, although 52 trustees are listed on the most recent Form 990 (2020 for the year ending June 30, 2021) which appears to be due to timing differences.  34 of the 52 (65%) of the trustees are male while 18 of the 52 (35%) are female. Executive Compensation at the Major League Baseball Players Association

The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 5 – a union representing the players (40-man rosters on 30 Major League Baseball teams or 1,200 players) and the group commercial and licensing activities of the active players.  Essentially, the MLBPA is the collective bargaining representative for all current Major League Baseball players assisting them with grievances, salary arbitration (the average player compensation is $4 million annually with a minimum compensation of $600,000), playing conditions, and the group licensing agent on behalf of the players.

In addition to the players, all managers, coaches, and trainers that have signed contracts with a major league club may join the MLBPA.  Annual dues are estimated to be about $16,000 annually. Read more »

Executive Compensation at Baycare Health Systems (2020)

Baycare Health System is one of the largest healthcare systems in Florida.  Headquartered in Clearwater with 15 hospitals, 18 urgent care centers, 4 surgery centers, 36 imaging facilities, 171 primary care and physician practice locations, and 35 walk-in health care facilities in Publix supermarkets throughout Tampa Bay and West Central Florida, Baycare Health System serves the Tampa Bay and western-central regions of Florida.

Baycare Health System consists of dozens of other organizations (i.e. tax-exempt organizations, taxable partnerships, corporations, and trusts), who pay a “management fee” to a tax-exempt, non-profit entity called “Baycare Health Systems, Inc” (BHSI).   BHSI manages the whole system.  This post reports the executive compensation of BHSI only (see the other Form 990’s for executive compensation of other related/affiliated entities). Executive Compensation at Mass General Brigham (2021)

Mass General Brigham (formerly known as Partners HealthCare) is a non-profit, tax-exempt healthcare provider with 16 member institutions that include hospitals (14), medical centers, urgent and emergency care facilities, community health centers, physician and rehabilitation networks, a teaching organization, health insurance plan, and more in the Boston area who changed its name to Mass General Brigham (taking the name of two premier hospitals: Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s) in November, 2019.

With an estimated 82,000 employees (including 6,500 physicians and 9,100 registered nurses), Mass General Brigham is the largest private employer and healthcare provider in Massachusetts. The Mass General Brigham healthcare network has dozens of related and affiliated tax-exempt organizations and several taxable as a corporation, partnership, or trust (see Schedule R of the Form 990’s). Executive Compensation at the National Basketball Players Association (2020)

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 5 – a trade union representing the 450 basketball players (30 teams with 15 players) in the NBA. So, this association serves a very small populatlon.

In 2020, ,the NBPA reported total revenue of $67 million (compared to $45 million the previous year), most of which came from royalties ($51 million), membership dues $7 million), and investment income/gains ($6 million). It is unclear how much each NBA player pays in membership due because the NBPA also has dues for agents which ranges from $2,500 – $7,500 annually, depending on how many players the agent represents. Executive Compensation at the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Federation of NY (2021)

The United Jewish Appeal Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of NY, Inc is also known as the UJA Federation of NY.

Based in New York City, the UJA Federation of NY has historically been focused on raising funds and using those funds to make grants (61% of revenue in 2019, 68% of revenue in 2020, and 54% of revenue in 2021) – primarily to domestic Jewish organizations including $50 million to the Jewish Federations of North America in 2021 – and strengthen their balance sheet by allotting millions annually to the general fund (they reported having $1.5 billion in net assets by the end of 2021).

In 2021, the UJA Federation of NY used 54% of revenue ($181 million) for grants, 23% of revenue ($78 million) to pay for organization expenses, and allocated 23% of revenue ($75 million) to the general fund. Read more »
