Executive Compensation at Sentara Healthcare

Sentara Healthcare is a healthcare system with more than 28,000 employees who work at more than 300 sites of care including 12 hospitals and 4 medical groups in Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.  In addition, Sentara includes Optima Health, a health insurance provider for more than 500,000 people in Virginia and Ohio.

Although Sentara Healthcare generally refers to one organization, Sentara Healthcare includes dozens of organizations. For the purpose of this post, the executive compensation at Sentara Healthcare, a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) based in Norfolk, Virginia that employs the CEO and President and supporting staff is addressed.  It is important to note there are other related/affiliated organization (Sentara Hospitals, Sentara Medical Group, Sentara RMH Medical Center, etc) whose executive compensation will be covered in future posts. Executive Compensation at Scripps Health

Scripps Health is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) healthcare provider that includes hospitals (5), clinics, medical centers, urgent care facilities, walk-in clinics, hospice care, surgery centers, specialty care centers and health plans. Although “Scripps Health” often refers to an entire healthcare system, it is important to point out that Scripps Health consists of many organizations – both non-profit and for-profit.

The executive compensation reported on the Form 990 (2017 for the year ending September 30, 2018) for “Scripps Health,” the non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) – a single entity – is the subject of this post. Governed by 16 voting members (trustees) of a  board, 14 of whom are independent, Scripps Health reported board composition being 10 males and 6 females. Read more »

Executive Compensation at Roper St. Francis Healthcare

CareAlliance Health Services is a South Carolina tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) doing business as Roper St. Francis Healthcare (RSFH).

Established in 1998, the Roper St Francis Healthcare system is actually several non-profit organizations (see Schedule R of the Form 990, the link of which is at the end of this post) that include hospitals (4) and other entities.

This post addresses the executive compensation at RSFH, the management and oversight entity of related/affiliated hospitals and healthcare subsidiaries. However, it is important to note RSFH uses Atrium Health, formerly Carolinas Healthcare System (an unrelated organization) for management oversight services. Read more »

Executive Compensation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA) is the largest art museum in the US with two sites in New York City (the Met Fifith Avenue and the Met Cloisters).  Established in 1870, MMA is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) based in New York City with 46 trustees (44 of whom are independent), although 48 are listed on the Form 990 (2018 for the year ending June 30, 2019) due to timing differences.  34 of the 48 (71%) listed are male while 14 (29%) are female.

How Revenue is Spent at the American Legion

The American Legion is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (19) – a veteran’s organization permitted to conduct social and welfare activities for its members.  Established more than 100 years ago, at the end of WWI, the American Legion has about 1.8 million members. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana and is organized into 55 departments, one for each of the 50 states along with DC, Puerto Rico, Dance, Mexico, and the PHillipines.

There are two types of membership:  regular active and paid up for life.  Regular Active membership dues vary (but are about $40 annually) because each post determines their own dues rate. However, if a veteran joins through the Legion headquarters, a special introductory rate is provided and the new member is assigned to the post in which state he/she resides.  Paid up for Life membership is about $1,400. How Membership Dues are Spent at the Florida Education Association (FEA)

The Florida Education Association (FEA) is a labor union representing about 150,000 teachers and education employees in Florida. Based in Tallahassee, Florida, FEA is the largest union (measured by members) in the State of Florida and is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and the national labor unions: American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association  (NEA), which means that membership in a local union (there are about 100) in Florida ensures membership in the FEA, AFT, and NEA.  However, Florida is a right-to-work state so public education employees are not required to join a union.
