Executive Compensation at Bon Secours Mercy Health (2023)

Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) became one of the largest Catholic healthcare providers serving communities in Ohio, Kentucky, New York, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida when merged with Mercy Health in September, 2018.

A tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare system that consists of nearly 1,200 non-hospital healthcare facilities including 57 tax-exempt organizations, 37 organizations taxable as a partnership, and 49 organizations taxable as a corporation or trust, BSMH reports the net patient revenue from 50 hospitals and other care facilities through BSMH, along with management fees paid to BSMH for network management.

Executive Compensation at Banner Health(2023)

Banner Health is a tax-exempt non-profit healthcare system that operates 33 hospitals and numerous health care clinics, nursing homes, home health care agencies, urgent care centers, and ambulatory facilities in 6 states with more than 55,000 employees.

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Banner Health consists of dozens of related/affiliated organizations (including taxable partnerships, trusts, and corporations) but for the purpose of this post, the executive compensation of Banner Health (a 501 (c) (3)) is reported.

Banner Health has 14 members (directors) in its governing body, 13 of whom are independent, although 16 are listed on the most recent Form 990 (2023):   12 of the 16 (75%) are male while 4 of the 16 (25%) are female. What is unusual (compared to other non-profit healthcare providers) is that the directors receive $43,500-$111,500 each in compensation, except for the President and CEO, Peter Fine, who received more than $8 million in compensation. Dignity Health is part of the CommonSpirit Health System (In 2019, Dignity Health merged with Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) to become one of the largest tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare systems in the United States). With more than 60,000 employees staffing 400 care centers and 41 hospitals in 22 states, Dignity Health is based in San Francisco, CA (whereas CommonSpirit Health is based in Chicago, IL). 41 highly compensated employees of Providence Health and Services – Washington (PH&S) (part of the Providence St Joseph Health (PSJH), a non-profit, tax-exempt integrated healthcare provider associated with the Catholic Church. With 51 hospitals and nearly 1,000 clinics staffed by 122,000 employees across seven western states (Washington, Oregon, Montana, New Mexico, California, Texas, and Alaska), the Providence St Joseph Health system came to be when PH&S merged with Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH) received $291 million in compensation from 2017-2023. Executive Compensation at Providence Health and Services (WA) 2023

Providence Health and Services – Washington (PH&S) is part of the Providence St Joseph Health (PSJH), a non-profit, tax-exempt integrated healthcare provider associated with the Catholic Church. With 51 hospitals and nearly 1,000 clinics staffed by 122,000 employees across seven western states (Washington, Oregon, Montana, New Mexico, California, Texas, and Alaska), the Providence St Joseph Health system came to be when PH&S merged with Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH), in 2016. (note: PSJH – the overall executive management arm – is the sole member of PH&S).

There are 105 tax-exempt organizations, 42 taxable partnerships, and 41 taxable corporations or trusts that make up the network.  These organizations pay PH&S about $4 billion annually for management and oversight. Read more »
