Executive Compensation at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (2022)

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 6 – a trade association – for food and nutrition specialists.  Claiming to be “your source for science-based food and nutrition information, AND has been in the news recently for “making millions from junk food makers” by investing in food stocks (i.e. Pepsi), and from accepting donations from junk food, sugar and soda makers (i.e. Coca-Cola, Kellogg, Hershey, Nestle, and Conagra). Professional nutrition specialists partnering with processed food companies does not fare well on the national stage with the public who looks to the organization for unbiased and science-based advice. Executive Compensation at Samaritan’s Purse (2022)

Samaritan’s Purse is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) established in 1970 by Bob Pierce who died in 1978. W. Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham) became Chairman, President, and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse in 1979 and has held the position since although he is also an evangelist for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Based in Boone, North Carolina, Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational Christian organization that provides “spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.”  How do they do this?  Primarily through grants (i.e. transporting shoebox gifts:  a box filled with toys, supplies, and hygiene items) which for the past few years average 27% of revenue because Samaritan’s Purse focused on strengthening their balance sheet by increasing savings and to do this they spent significantly less than they collected:  Samaritan’s Purse has spent about 70% of revenue over the past few years which allowed them to put $250-$330 million annually into savings or $850 million over the past three years so that by year-end 2022, Samaritan’s Purse had $1.5 billion in net assets.   Read more »

The Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association is commonly referred to as the Alzheimer’s Association. A tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 whose goal is to eliminate Alzheimers Disease through research but also offer support, information/public awareness, and education on the disease, the Alzheimer’s Association raised $412 million in 2023 (compared to $502 million in 2022, $405 million in 2021, $403 million in 2020 and $390 million in 2019), primarily from contributions, gifts, and grants ($408 million including $28 million from the government). Executive Compensation at Bon Secours Mercy Health (2022)

Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) became one of the largest Catholic healthcare providers serving communities in Ohio, Kentucky, New York, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida when merged with Mercy Health in September, 2018.

A tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare system that consists of nearly 1,400 non-hospital healthcare facilities including 58 tax-exempt organizations, 40 organizations taxable as a partnership, and 48 organizations taxable as a corporation or trust, BSMH reports the net patient revenue from 27 hospitals and other care facilities through BSMH, along with management fees paid to BSMH for network management.

Executive Compensation at the Air Line Pilots Association (2022)

The Airline Pilots Association International (ALPA) is the largest airline pilot union in the world with more than 77,000 pilots from 41 US and Canadian airlines.  Based in McLean, Virginia, ALPA is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (5) whose membership dues are approximately $3,000-$4,000 annually (based on 1.95% of gross income which appears to be about $200,000 annually or taking total membership revenue ($229 million) divided by total pilots (77,000)).

In 2022, ALPA reported total revenue of $246 million, most of which came from membership dues ($229 million). Expenses totaled $214 million (including $3 million in depreciation) with the largest expense reported to be compensation.

Hillsdale College, a small private liberal arts college with 1,600 students in southern Michigan (Hillsdale) is the college virtually no one heard of 20 years ago.  Founded by abolitionist, Free Will Baptist preachers nearly 200 years ago in 1844, Hillsdale until recently maintained a small word of mouth following among conservatives attracting students (and conservative parents of smart (avg ACT 30-33, mid-range SAT 1350-1490 – 89-96 percentile, mid-range GPA 3.9-4.0) young people) who want a conservative liberal arts education, which is kind of an oxymoron. Executive Compensation at Paralyzed Veterans of America (2023)

The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 based in Washington, DC (although the organization has 73 offices and 33 chapters throughout the country (Note:  the Form 990 reports 33 chapters but the website reports 34 chapters).

Established in 1947, PVA has a core mission of vets serving vets, funding spinal cord research, and advocating for disability rights, according to their website. So, the question most donors want to know is:  how much of my donation goes to the organization’s core mission?  The answer:  about 49% in 2023 with the remainder (58%)  spent on a marketing, publications, and advertising (note:  PVA spent $8 million more than the organization raised in 2023, or $107 for every $100 raised). Since the organization reported $11 million in unrealized gains on investments and had about $100 million in net assets, there was no deterioration in net assets).
