Executive Compensation at the Horatio Alger Association (2022)

The Horatio Alger Association (HAA) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3, HAA is based in Alexandria, Virginia.  The organization is overseen by 78 independent voting members (board members) of the governing body.  72 of the 78 board members (92%) are male while 6 of the 78 members (8%) are female.

HAA was named for the gilded age writer, Horatio Alger who wrote about impoverished boys who rose from their humble backgrounds through education and good works to higher echelons of society.  Consequently HAA awards need based scholarships and honors the achievements of those who have overcome adversity and obtained personal achievement and success throw perseverance.  At the heart of HAA is the firm belief in achieving the “American Dream” through the free-enterprise system.  Consequently, grants has historically been the largest expense for the organization (65% of revenue raised in 2021 was awarded in grants but only 11% for $2.4 million was awarded in grants in 2022). How Revenue is Spent at the Horatio Alger Association (2022)

At the heart of HAA is the firm belief in achieving the “American Dream” through the free-enterprise system.  So, the purpose of this organization appears to be the awarding of grants (but surprisingly only $2.4 million or about 11% of total revenue was awarded in grants, while the Executive Director, Terrence Giroux received more than $5 million in compensation in 2022 – 24% of the $22 million in revenue raised in 2022). Executive Compensation at the University of Texas (2022)

The University of Texas at Austin  is also known as “UT Austin” (note:  Austin is the flagship school of the University of Texas System which includes 13 UT institutions). With about 51,000 students (42,000 undergraduate and 9,000 graduate), tuition, room and board for in-state students are  approximately $35,000 annually while out-of-state students pay approximately $65,000 for tuition, room and board.

UT Austin is often in the news or on the lists of the top largest university endowments because they have a $43 billion endowment (as of 2021) which is second to Harvard who has $50 billion. It’s a big job to manage a $43 billion endowment and that task falls upon The University of Texas Texas A & M Investment Management Company (UTMCO), a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 that is overseen by 9 voting members (directors) of the governing body, 8 of whom are independent This post addresses the executive compensation of those employed at UTMCO. Executive Compensation at Texas Christian University (2022)

Texas Christian University (TCU) is a private, tax-exempt non-profit research university in Fort Worth, Texas that is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Approximately 11,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students are pursuing 114 undergraduate areas of study and 98 graduate degrees on the 300 acre campus a few miles from downtown Fort Worth.

Tuition, room and board are approximately $80,000 annually for an undergraduate student (with about 80% receiving financial aid). With an acceptance rate of 40% (20,000 applications in 2022 of which 8,000 were accepted, and about 3,000 chose to attend), TCU counts about 55% of its students coming from out of state. Read more »

Executive Compensation at Dignity Health (2022)

Dignity Health is part of the CommonSpirit Health System (In 2019, Dignity Health merged with Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) to become one of the largest tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare systems in the United States). With more than 60,000 employees staffing 400 care centers and 39 hospitals in 21 states, Dignity Health is based in San Francisco, CA (whereas CommonSpirit Health is based in Chicago, IL). Although Dignity Health has numerous related/affiliated non-profits, taxable corporations and trusts, this post is limited to addressing the executive compensation of Dignity Health, an affiliate of CommonSpirit Health. Executive Compensation at the National Federation of Independent Business (2022)

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 6 is a Chamber of Commerce of sorts for small and independent businesses across the country.

Based in Nashville, TN, NFIB is managed by 11 voting members (directors) of the governing body, 10 of whom are independent,  9 (82%) of whom are male while 2 (18%) are female. Read more »

Executive Compensation at St Joseph Health System (2022)

St. Joseph Health System (SJH) is a California-based non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) that is part of Washington-based Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH).  Affiliated with the Catholic church, SJH is an integrated healthcare system serving residents in northern California with 5 hospitals, 1 medical center, and numerous healthcare facilities staffed by thousands of employees.  Note:  SJH which also served West Texas and East New Mexico merged with Providence Health and Services (PH&S) to form PSJH in 2016.

SJH “governs and manages the healthcare system” which means the organizations that make up the network (111 tax-exempt non-profit organizations, 49 organizations taxable as partnerships, and 47 organizations taxable as corporations or trusts) are a source of revenue in exchange for oversight. Where Does $100 to Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation Go (2022)?

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation (SSTTF) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 that honors the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller, who died on September 11, 2001 while trying to save others, by paying off mortgages and building homes, and the provision of other programs to combat homelessness and helping fallen first responder families.

There are 7 voting members (directors) of the governing body, 6 of whom are independent although it appears that 5 of the 7 directors (Frank Siller, George Siller, Janis Hannon, Regina Vogt, and Mary Scullin) are related (siblings of Stephen Siller for whom the foundation was formed). Read more »

Where Does $100 to Doctors Without Borders Go (2022)?

Doctors Without Borders (DWB) or “Médicins Sans Frontiers” in French, is an international humanitarian medical organization – tax-exempt and non-profit – of French origin that provides emergency and medical care around the world.  The US office is one of 24 worldwide offices (called sections) and 17 branch offices in 21 countries governed by 14 voting members (directors), 13 of whom are independent, of the governing body (board of directors).

So, if you made a donation to the US office of DWB, how was the money used?  The organization’s website will tell you that 83% is spent on programs or the social mission, while 16% is spent on fundraising and 1% on general administration.  The Form 990 (2022) tells a slightly different story: Read more »
