Executive Compensation at Drexel University (2022)

Drexel University is a private research university in Philadelphia, PA (although there are satellite campuses) with about 25,000 students (an estimated 14,000 undergraduate students and 8,000 graduate students and 3,000 other students).  The annual cost of tuition, room and board (undergraduate) is about $80,000.

In 2022, Drexel reported total revenue of $1.4 billion (compared to $1.2 billion in 2021 and $1.3 billion in 2020) with the largest sources being tuition and fees ($1 billion), government grants ($129 million), related organizations ($39 million) and contributions, gifts ,and grants ($41 million). Executive Compensation at Virtua Health (2022)

Virtua Health is a tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare provider in southern New Jersey with 5 hospitals, 350 healthcare offices, and 7 urgent care centers and 7 emergency departments.  The entire Virtua healthcare network consists of 19 related tax-exempt organizations, 32 related taxable partnerships, and 4 related organizations taxable as a corporation or trust. This post addresses the executive compensation of Virtua Health, Inc (Virtua) – the non-profit that manages the entire organization and provides support services to these entities.  Consequently, Virtua’s primary source of revenue is the organizations that make up the network.

Virtua has 20 voting members (trustees) of its governing body, 18 of whom are independent; 17 of the 20 (70%) are male while 6 of the 20 (30%) are female. Read more »

Executive Compensation at the Mortgage Bankers Association of America (2022)

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) is a tax-exempt, non profit 501 (c) 6 national trade associate that represents the real estate finance industry.  Based in Washington, DC, the MBA has a reported 2,200 member companies.

There are 39 independent voting members (board members) of the governing body: 28 of the 39 (72%) are male while 11 (28%) are female. Read more »

Executive Compensation at Baycare Health Systems (2022)

Baycare Health System is one of the largest healthcare systems in Florida.  Headquartered in Clearwater with 16 hospitals, 18 urgent care centers, 4 surgery centers, 38 imaging facilities, 100 primary care and physician practice locations, and more than 30 walk-in health care facilities in Publix supermarkets throughout Tampa Bay and West Central Florida, Baycare Health System serves the Tampa Bay and western-central regions of Florida.

Baycare Health System consists of dozens of other organizations (i.e. tax-exempt organizations, taxable partnerships, corporations, and trusts), who pay a “management fee” to a tax-exempt, non-profit entity called “Baycare Health Systems, Inc” (BHSI).  BHSI manages the whole system.  This post reports the executive compensation of BHSI only (see the other Form 990’s for executive compensation of other related/affiliated entities). Executive Compensation at Memorial Hermann (2022)

Memorial Hermann Health System (MHHS) is a Houston-based tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare provider with more than 33,000 employees and 6,600 physicians that serve in 17 hospitals (14 that the organization owns and 3 in which they have joint ventures) and 260 care delivery sites in the Houston, Texas metropolitan area.

MHHS consists of many organizations (non-profits, corporations, trusts, and partnerships) but for the purpose of this post, the executive compensation reported on MHHS – a 501 (c) (3) – is addressed. Read more »

Executive Compensation at NorthShore University HealthSystem (2022)

NorthShore University Health System (NorthShore) is a healthcare delivery system (tax-exempt and non-profit) that includes 6 hospitals (Evanston, Glenbrook, Highland Park, Northwest Community, Skokie and Swedish) and more than 140 healthcare locations in the Chicago area.

Headquartered in Evanston, IL, Northshore is affiliated with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.  And, finally it is important to note that NorthShore is part of Endeavor Health, who united 9 regional hospitals and 300 care centers across Chicago through NorthShore, Edward-Elmhurst Health, Northwest Community Healthcare, and Swedish Hospital in 2022 creating the third largest healthcare system in the State of Illinois. Executive Compensation at Boston University (2022)

Boston University (BU) is a private research university with an acceptance rate at about 20% of applicants.  Located in Boston, Massachusetts, BU has about 37,00 students, of which 18,000 are undergraduates. The annual tuition, room, board, and fees is about $87,000.

In 2020, BU’s total revenue was $3.1 billion in 2022 (compared to $2.8 billion in 2021, $2.6 billion in 2020 and $2.7 billion in 2019) with most of the income coming from 2 sources: contributions, gifts, and grants ($73 million) and tuition, fees, and services  ($1.8 billion).  Expenses were $2.7 billion (not including $147 million in depreciation).  At year-end, BU had $5.2 billion in net fund assets – an increase of $1 billion since 2020 (even with a $532 million net unrealizable loss on investments in 2022). Executive Compensation at the American Hospital Association (2022)

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a trade organization that is a tax-exempt non-profit 501 (c) (6) that represents and works on behalf of its members (hospitals/owners of hospitals) to advocate their positions to government entities (i.e. Congress, Senate, etc) and provide education and assistance to its members.

In 2022, the AHA raised $139 million (compared to $129 million in 2021, $120 million in 2020, $143 million in 2019 and  $134 million in 2018) primarily through membership dues, education and licensing) and spent $130 million  (not including $2 million in depreciation) with the largest expense reported to be compensation ($71 million) followed by office expenses ($21 million),, travel and conferences ($17 million) and fees for services ($16 million).  With nearly $300 million in net fund assets, the organization  reports to represent nearly 5,000 hospitals.

Based in Chicago, Illinois, the AHA has 442 employees who were compensated $71 million in 2022 which equates to an average compensation of $161,000.  However, only 197 employees received more than $100,000 in compensation which means a smaller amount of employees received significant higher compensation.  The 18 most highly compensated employees were compensated $15 million and were reported to be: Read more »

Executive Compensation at Scripps Health (2022)

Scripps Health is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) healthcare provider that includes hospitals (4), clinics, medical centers, urgent care facilities, walk-in clinics, hospice care, surgery centers, specialty care centers and health plans. Although “Scripps Health” often refers to an entire healthcare system, it is important to point out that Scripps Health consists of many organizations – both non-profit and for-profit.

The executive compensation reported on the Form 990 (2021 for the year ending September 30, 2022) for “Scripps Health,” the non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) – a single entity – is the subject of this post. Governed by 20 voting members (trustees) of a  board, 19 of whom are independent, board composition is 14 (70%) males and 6 (30%) females (note: the Form 990 does not report gender; determinations were made based on name and google searches). Executive Compensation at the Boy Scouts (2022)

The Boy Scouts of America (Boy Scouts) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization headquartered in Irving, Texas.  As one of the largest youth organizations in the US, the Boy Scouts has gone through some tough times the past few years with allegations of child sexual abuse by former scouts, scoutmasters and other leaders that triggered a bankruptcy filing in 2020. With a recent settlement of $2.4 billion (to be established in a trust) for the thousands of sexual abuse victims (estimated to be 80,000), the Boy Scouts has experienced significant financial changes over the past few years.
