Hillsdale College, a small private liberal arts college with 1,600 students in southern Michigan (Hillsdale) is the college virtually no one heard of 20 years ago. Founded by abolitionist, Free Will Baptist preachers nearly 200 years ago in 1844, Hillsdale until recently maintained a small word of mouth following among conservatives attracting students (and conservative parents of smart (avg ACT 30-34, mid-range SAT 1370-1480 – 89-96 percentile, mid-range GPA 3.9-4.0) young people) who want a conservative liberal arts education, which is kind of an oxymoron. Approximately 20% of applicants are accepted, of which 62% opt to enroll. Read more

The Girl Scouts of the United States of America (Girl Scouts) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) based in New York, NY. With more than 2.5 million members (an estimated 1.8 million girl members and about 700,000 member volunteers) the Girl Scouts works to build “courage, confidence, and character” in young girls.
There are 28 independent voting members (board members) of the governing body (board), although 29 are listed on the Form 990 (2021 for the year ending September 30, 2022) – 25 of the 29 (86%) are female while 4 of the 29 (14%) are male. Read more

Where Does $100 to 350.org go (2021)?
350.org is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) founded in 2008 by a group of people along with author Bill McKibben, an environmentalist, to work towards ending the use of fossil fuels and build renewable energy.
Most scientists agree that the burning of fossil fuels is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas (followed by the animal agriculture industry) which has led to global warming. Named after the safe concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere – 350 parts per million, 350.org is a grassroots organization that has become more well known as the public has become aware of the effects of climate change.
Based in Brooklyn, New York, 350.org raises about $20-25 million annually (primarily through contributions), spends about 80% of those funds, and has about $13 million in net fund assets. Because the organization is relatively young, it appears they have been focused on their mission but also building up their general fund. Hence, the reason they have not been spending as much as they raise. Read more

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 4 (a social welfare organization) based in Chicago, Illinois that serves as a national association of 34 independent BCBS companies that provide health insurance to more than 115 million people.
BCBSA also own and manage the BCBS trademarks and names in more than 170 countries around the world. Consequently, revenue comes from the members of BCBSA whose revenue comes from insurance premiums. In other words, part of your BCBS health insurance premiums are paid to BCBSA.
There are 37 voting members of the governing body, of whom 36 are independent, although there are 43 listed on the Form 990 (2019) of whom 35 (81%) are male while 8 (19%) are female.

Pets: IMHA and One Vaccine at a Time….
A few weeks ago, my daughter took her 6-year old female corgi to a new vet who gave the dog 3 vaccinations (rabies, leptospira, and bordetello). Five days later, the dog collapsed so my daughter took her to Burlington Emergency Veterinary Specialists (BEVS) where they admitted the dog.
Bloodwork indicated she was anemic: a PCV (Packed Cell Volume that is also called hematocrit) score of 23 compared to a normal 35, and an ultrasound showed an enlarged spleen which led to the diagnosis of Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) where the body no longer recognizes healthy red blood cells as part of the body and develops antibodies to destroy them. Without enough healthy red blood cells, the organs are deprived of oxygen, or the animal is overwhelmed by a blood clot. Read more
