Where Does $100 to Homes For Our Troops Go (2020)?

Homes For Our Troops should be held up as the gold standard in how to help veterans:  they provide a much needed product (build and donate custom homes outfitted for disabilities) and a service (a pro-bono financial planner for three years to assist in financial planning and household budgeting, along with homeownership education and warranty coverage to ensure that the Veteran is set up for long-term success as a homeowner).

Homes For Our Troops does this while spending more than 80% of revenue on the actual homes. Also notable is low executive compensation:   the four (4) top executives are compensated $140,000-$175,000.  There are no first class or business travel expenses, companion travel expenses, health or social club dues or initiation fees, discretionary spending accounts, or gross up payments/tax indemnifications.  In the non-profit world, this is truly commendable. Executive Compensation at FirstHealth of the Carolinas

FirstHealth of the Carolinas (FirstHealth) is a tax-exempt, non-profit providing healthcare service to 15 counties in the mid-Carolinas.  Headquartered in Pinehust, North Carolina, FirstHealth has about 5,300 employees working in 4 hospitals and 9 patient care centers.

FirstHealth has 17 voting members (board members) of the governing body (board), 16 of whom are independent. 18 board members are listed on the Form 990 (which appears to be due to timing differences) – 15 of whom are male while 3 are female (note: the Form 990 does not report gender identity. Executive Compensation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2020)

 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA) is the largest art museum in the US with two sites in New York City (the Met Fifith Avenue and the Met Cloisters).  Established in 1870, MMA is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) based in New York City with 47 trustees (45 of whom are independent), although 48 are listed on the Form 990 (2018 for the year ending June 30, 2020) due to timing differences.  32 of the 48 (67%) listed are male while 16 (33%) are female.

Executive Compensation at the American Lung Association (2020)

The American Lung Association is a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) that focuses on preventing lung disease and improving lung health by providing program services (education and advocacy to the public (research grants comprise about 10% of expenses).

There are 17 independent members (directors) of the governing body (board of directors), although the Form 990 lists 19 directors, which appears to be due to timing differences.  12 of the 19 (63%) directors are male while 7 of the 19 (37%) are female (note:  gender identity is not reported on the Form 990; conclusions were made based on name and google searches). Executive Compensation at BJC HealthCare (2019)

BJC HealthCare (whose legal name is BJC Health System) is one of the largest non-profit healthcare providers in the country with 15 hospitals and multiple community health locations in Missouri and Illinois.

BJC HealthCare consists of dozens of affiliated non-profits and taxable partnerships, trusts, and corporations but the one that encompasses most of the employees of the network is the BJC Health System Group Return (2019) – hereafter referred to as BJC – which shows the organization reported $5.5 billion in revenue (most of which came from the provision of healthcare) and $5.2 billion in expenses (with the 2 largest expenses being compensation ($2 billion) and medical supplies ($1 billion). Mercyhealth is a regional healthcare system with 7 hospitals and 85 primary and specialty care locations in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Headquartered in Janesville, Wisconsin, Mercyhealth consists of many non-profit, tax-exempt organizations (9) and also owns several organizations that are taxed as corporations including Mercycare Insurance Company, Rockford Health Insurance (which is domiciled in Bermuda), and Mercycare HMO (which consolidated with Mercycare Insurance Company). The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) was established in 1971 as a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) (3) advocacy organization specializing in civil rights and public interest litigation.

Based in Montgomery, Alabama, the SPLC has 13 independent voting members on its governing body although 15 are listed on the most recent Form 990 (2019 for the year ending October 31, 2020), 9 (60%) of whom are male while 6 (40%) are female. Read more »
