Where Does $100 to the American Lung Association Go (2022)?

The American Lung Association (ALA) was established more than 100 years ago (1918) initially to fight tuberculosis but expanded its mission to improve lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

There are 19 independent voting members (directors) of the governing body;  13 of the 19 (68%) are male while 6 of the 19 (32%) are female.

Specifically, ALA works to “defeat” lung cancer, “improve” the air we breathe, “reduce” the burden of lung disease on individuals and families, and “eliminate” tobacco use and tobacco-related diseases. To do this, the organization relies on staff (647 people) so the organization is a non-profit (a 501 (c) (3)) that provides services rather than a non-profit that collects revenue to make grants for funding research (ALA only made $13 million in grants in 2022) or program assistance. Executive Compensation at Liberty University (2022)

Liberty University (Liberty) – a private evangelical Christian university based in Lynchburg, Virginia – has been in the news quite a bit over the past few years.  Seems the US Department of Education has been investigating Liberty for violations related to the public reporting of campus crime.  Faced with a large fine (estimated to be $37 million), Liberty seems to be in the hot seat again (the Jerry Falwell, Jr sexual misconduct saga that resulted in Falwell’s resignation as President of the university hit the public forum in 2020), although $37 million is a drop in the bucket for Liberty who has more than $3 billion in net assets. Reine Vegan Cheese

Plant-based cheese (or vegan cheese) has been growing in popularity in recent years with growth expected to increase at an annual rate of 16% over the next 7 years, according to a market research report by RationalStat (a company that does market research, analysis, forecast and trends).

The growth is being fueled by turophiles (cheese lovers) who want the savory creamy texture of dairy-based cheese without the lactose, and for those seeking a healthier alternative to animal-based products. Read more »

In trying to understand how $100 is spent at FTC, it is important to consider what the organization primarily does:  they collect non-cash contributions and distribute these items.  So, if the $100 donation is a non-cash item, then the contribution is distributed to another organization (another non-profit that is probably in the USA). But, if the donation is cash, then the $100 is used to pay for the organization costs of FTC. So, there are two ways to look at how $100 is spent, both of which will be presented in the following paragraphs. Read more »
