Executive Compensation at United Way (2019)

United Way is one of the most recognizable charitable organizations in the United States and throughout the world.  In the United States, “United Way” generally refers to United Way Worldwide (formerly United Way of America) and/or one of the 1,800 local offices in 40 countries and territories that operate as separate 501 (c) (3)’s.

United Way Worldwide is the leadership and support organization for the whole United Way network. Each organization collects funds and makes grants to local organizations, and also contributes a portion of the revenue collected to United Way Worldwide to support oversight operations. Read more »

Executive Compensation at FMI

In the food industry, there is “The Food Industry Association” whose name was legally change to “Food Marketplace Inc” (FMI) – a non-profit, tax-exempt organization based in Arlington, Virginia whose mission, as a trade association, is to “represent, educate and improve the food industry.”  Formerly called the Supermarket Institute (and the Food Industry Association, FMI represents an estimated 1,500 members who have 40,000 retail food stores, 25,000 pharmacies and an indeterminate number of suppliers and business partners within the food retail industry.

In a country flush with trade associations that raise hundreds of millions of dollars, FMI is small:  they raise about $30 million annually ($26-$32 million annually over the most recent 7 year period) that comes primarily from two sources (membership dues and registration fees/exhibit fees, and sponsorships) and spend slightly less (primarily on compensation for the 91 employees, travel and conferences, fees for outside services, and office expenses). Executive Compensation at the NCAA (2020)

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization focused on college sports in the US. With 1,100 member colleges and universities in 102 athletic conferences across the country that participate in 90 championships in 24 sports in 3 divisions, the NCAA is a powerful and well financed organization.

There are 24 independent board members of the governing party,   17 of the 25 (68%) board members are male while 7 of the 25 (32%) are female. Read more »

Executive Compensation at Consumer Reports (2020)

Consumer Reports, the beloved watchdog organization that many people rely on in for unbiased consumer product information is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization based in Yonkers, New York.

In 2020, the organization reported total revenue of $250 million (compared to $255 million in 2019), most of which came from subscriptions (both print and on-line).

Expenses totaled $220 million (not including $15 million in depreciation) with the largest expense compensation ($96 million) for the 673 employees, who received an average compensation of $143,000. However, only 360 employees (about half of the employees) received more than $100,000 in compensation. Read more »

Executive Compensation at the Consumer Technology Association (2020)

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) is a tax-exempt, non-profit trade association (a 501 (c) 6, representing more than 2,200 consumer technology companies in the US consumer technology industry. Based in Arlington, VA, CTA promotes the common business interests of members engaged with the manufacture, sale, and distribution of consumer technology products.

The governing board of CTA has 13 voting members, all of whom are independent. 14 directors are listed on the Form 990 (2018) of which 10 (71%) are male while 4 (29%) are female. Read more »

Executive Compensation at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) 2021

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is considered by many to be the leading conservation organization in the world. Established nearly 60 years ago in 1960, the WWF is based in Washington, DC but operates all over the world (in more than 100 countries with 556 staff in 29 foreign offices and 95 at headquarters).

There are 25 voting members (directors) on the governing body (board of directors), 24 of whom are independent.  The Form 990 (2020) lists 27 board members (which appears to be due to timing differences), 18 (67%) of whom are male while 9 (33%) are female (note: the form 990 does not report gender identity. Conclusions were made based on name and google searches). Read more »

Executive Compensation at Piedmont Healthcare (2020)

Piedmont Healthcare is a tax-exempt, non -profit healthcare provider based in Atlanta, Georgia with 22 hospitals, 55 urgent care centers, 25 “QuickCare” centers, and more than 1875 clinic physician offices that employ more than 34,000 employees that serve communities that comprise 80% of Georgia’s population.

Made up of dozens of other organizations that include non-profits, taxable corporations, and taxable trusts, Piedmont Healthcare has one organization – Piedmont Healthcare, Inc. (PHI) – whose mission is to manage all the affiliated/related and subsidiary organizations in the system.

PHI has 21 voting members of its governing body, 15 of whom are independent. 18 of the 21 (86%) board members are male while 3 of the 21 (14%) are female. Read more »

Executive Compensation at the National Urban League (2020)

The National Urban League (NUL) is a nonpartisan civil rights organization that advocates on behalf of African Americans for economic and social injustice and against racial discrimination. A non-profit, tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) headquartered in New York but with an office in Washington, DC, NUL has 90 affiliates serving 300 communities in 36 states and the District of Columbia.

There are 42 voting members (trustees) of the governing body, 41 of whom are independent.  The Form 990 (2020) lists 47 trustees (due to timing differences, 35 (75%) of whom are male; 12 (25%) of whom are female.
