Uncle Jerry’s Pretzels

Uncle Jerry’s has been making crunchy sourdough pretzels for 26 years the old-fashioned way: by hand. The original recipe (written more than 100 years ago) for these Pennsylvania Dutch pretzels includes no sweeteners, shortening, oil, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors – just simple ingredients like unbleached wheat flour, water, sourdough, yeast, salt, and baking soda. Today, the pretzels are made the same way in a cozy south-central Lancaster County, Pennsylvania bakery where each pretzel is rolled and twisted by hand and then baked to perfection: regular (special), dark, or lite. Spreads and Beyond

If Buzz Lightyear were to quit his day job and promote real fruit spreads instead of space travel his signature statement would change from “To infinity, and beyond” to “Spreads & Beyond” because the company with the catchy phrase name has positioned itself as an innovator and visionary in the jams, preserves, and spreads industry. How you ask? By keeping it real – meaning their spreads are made using fresh fruit with no added sugar, pectin, preservatives, colors, sweeteners or fruit from concentrate – and giving customers what they want: fresh, wholesome fruit preserves, chutney, and spreads.

Spreads & Beyond makes three delicious fruit spreads – Strawberry Preserves, Blueberry Orange Peel Preserves, and Mango Star Anise Chutney – that scream “fruit” in every delicious bite.  Read more »

Five Fantastic Granolas

Do you remember the days when the granola selection was limited to Kellogg’s, General Foods, Bear Naked (the new kid on the block years ago), and the bulk containers in the health food aisle? Over the past five years, the granola market has literally exploded with dozens of companies making the “perfect” granola which is, of course, totally subjective.

There are purists who favor a granola with a base of oats, nuts, and honey and there are the adventurous ones who want dried fruits, seeds, and other tasty additions. And, there are those who favor a low sugar (as in less than 6 grams of sugar per serving), low-fat (nearly impossible if nuts are included), gluten-free, nut-free, high protein, high fiber, and more. The good news: there is a granola to suit nearly everyone’s tastes. Read more »

The Victorio Apple Peeler

Bushels of apples are being delivered to farmers markets and grocery stores across the country as we settle into Autumn so there is no better time to start planning what to do with all those apples. Enjoying them freshly picked is always a good option but if your Fall menu includes apple pie, apple dumplings, applesauce, dehydrated apple slices or an exquisite tarte tartin (for the super adventurous), peeling, coring and slicing apples will be on your to-do list. A paring knife or vegetable peeler does the job but a better tool is the Victorio Apple Peeler: a machine that peels, cores, and slices apples easier, quicker and with less waste. Read more »

COWSPIRACY: The Sustainability Secret

Why doesn’t The Sierra Club, Oceana, Greenpeace, Surfrider Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Rainforest Action Network, and Amazon Watch loudly communicate about the number one environmental problem in the world?

News outlets recently reported that Bill Gates, Peter Thiel, Jerry Yang, and Jessica Powell are investing in Hampton Creek – a small company based in San Francisco focused on developing new ways of utilizing plants to replace eggs and animal products in a variety of different foods. Why would the co-founders of Microsoft, PayPal, Yahoo, and Google invest in a company promoting plant-based foods? The answer is surprisingly simple: there is one single industry that is destroying the planet more than any other:  animal agriculture (which includes animal livestock and fishing). Hard to believe? It’s true but it’s one of the best kept secrets on this planet because no one wants to talk about it. Why? That’s a good question. Read more »

The Ultimate Peanut Butter Cup

Man cannot live by bread alone. He must have chocolate and peanut butter.

Nearly one hundred years ago, a former dairy farmer and shipping foreman for Hershey named H.B. Reese invented the Peanut Butter Cup. Decades passed and until recently there hasn’t been much innovation in the peanut butter cup industry. Chocolate maker extraordinaire – Theo Chocolate – and master peanut butter maker, CB’s Nuts – have joined forces to make one very extraordinary Peanut Butter Cup: ground fresh peanuts covered in creamy milk or rich dark chocolate.
