Tulane University (Tulane) is located in New Orleans, Louisiana. With nearly 14,000 students (8,600 undergraduate and 5,400 graduate), Tulane is a nonsectarian private university that commands about $75,000 annually for tuition and board, or about $300,000 for an undergraduate degree. Why so much?
The answer: tuition dollars are supporting a huge education machine where, in the case of Tulane, more than half of the total expenses ($528 million out of $1 billion in expenses, not including depreciation) are compensation-related costs for the 10,909 employees in 2017 (an average of $48,000 per employee – compare this to $75,000 at Yale, $68,000 at Penn, $64,000 at Princeton, and $46,000 at Georgetown). The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is a charitable tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 established in 1946 in the District of Columbia to defend “democratic ideals and eliminate anti-Semitism and bigotry in the United States and around the world, while providing knowledgeable leadership on a national level for the American Jewish community.”
Based in New York City, the ADL has staff in 27 offices nationwide. It is important to point out the ADL really consists of two entities: the ADL and the Anti-Defamation League Foundation (Foundation) – both of which operate out of the same office in New York City. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is a a non-profit 501 (c) 3 based in New York City. The organization is “the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization” so you would expect this organization to raise a lot of money, and they do.
In 2017, the JDC raised $333 million of which they awarded $209 million ($63 out of every $100) in grants. The remaining revenue – $124 million – was primarily spent on staff compensation, office-related expenses, travel and conventions, and fees for services.
