Where Does $100 to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Go (2019)?

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is one of the largest, if not the largest philanthropy focused solely on health. The foundation’s goal, through the use of grants, is “to improve the health and healthcare of all Americans.”

Given that people in the US (compared to other high income countries) have shorter lives, more heart disease, obesity, diabetes, lung disease, disabilities, HIV and AIDS, drug-related deaths, adolescent pregnancy, bad birth outcomes, and disabilities than nearly every single other country (as measured by the American Public Health Association) but spend more per capita (about $8,000 per person) than every other country in the world, is there any question the US needs to focus on health and reversing the current trends? But, the more potent question is this:  Is the foundation making a difference – reversing the health trends in the US – with the more than $400 million in grants awarded annually and the $300 million the foundation spends annually to support, manage, and grow itself? How Revenue is Spent at the World Wildlife Fund (2019)

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is considered by many to be the leading conservation organization in the world. Established nearly 60 years ago in 1960, the WWF is based in Washington, DC but operates all over the world (in more than 100 countries).

The most recent IRS Form 990 (2018) reports financial information about the organization for the year beginning July 1, 2018 and ending June 30, 2019 (hereafter referred to as 2019).  A 501 (c) (3), WWF reports the following information on revenue, expenses, grants, assets, liabilities, and the organization’s net fund balance. Executive Compensation at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)

The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) was established in 1979 “as a nimble non-profit with strong community partnerships that would connect hard-to-tap public and private resources with underinvested places and people….” Sounds like United Way and in many ways the organizations are similar except that LISC is a much smaller version with 37 local offices in 2,200 counties in 45 states (compared to thousands of United Way offices throughout the world). Executive Compensation at Piedmont Healthcare

Piedmont Healthcare is a tax-exempt, non -profit healthcare provider based in Atlanta, Georgia with 11 hospitals, 34 urgent care centers, 25 “QuickCare” centers, and more than 550 physician offices that employ more than 23,000 employees.

Made up of dozens of other organizations that include non-profits, taxable corporations, and taxable trusts, Piedmont Healthcare has one organization – Piedmont Healthcare, Inc. (PHI) – whose mission is to manage all the affiliated/related and subsidiary organizations in the system.

PHI has 20 voting members of its governing body, 14 of whom are independent. 17 of the 20 (85%) board members are male while 3 of the 20 (15%) are female. Read more »

Executive Compensation at UPMC (Pittsburgh)

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is a tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare provider with more than 90,000 employees that work in 40 hospitals and more than 700 healthcare-related clinics/offices and a 4 million member insurance services division (the largest medical insurer in western Pennsylvania).

The organization consists of hundreds of related/affiliated organizations (both non-profit and for-profit). This post addresses the executive compensation at UPMC Group, a tax-exempt, non-profit 501 (c) 3 that employs the largest number of employees (65,000) within the system. Read more »

Executive Compensation at Yale New Haven Health (2019)

The Yale New Haven Health System serves Connecticut patients through 5 hospitals, a multi specialty physician foundation and numerous other offices staffed by more than 26,000 employees.

Based in New Haven, CT, the Yale New Haven Health System consists of dozens of separate tax-exempt non-profit organizations, taxable partnerships and taxable corporations and trusts. The purpose of this post is to report the executive compensation at Yale New Haven Health Services Corporation (YNHHSC), a tax-exempt non-profit 501 (c) (3) that employs 3,275 employees who provide overall management to the entire Yale New Haven Health System. Executive Compensation at Iowa Health System

Iowa Health System is also known as UnityPoint Health, one of the largest healthcare systems in the Iowa, although the organization also provides healthcare in Illinois and Wisconsin (hence, the name change using the word “unity”). Although the name change occurred in 2013, Iowa Health System still files a form 990 under the Iowa Health System name but notes that the organization is doing business as UnityPoint Health. This entity is the management arm of the organization.

Commonspirit Health was created in 2019 when Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and Dignity Health merged to become the largest tax-exempt, non-profit healthcare system in the United States. With more than 150,000 employees staffing 1,000 care centers and 137 hospitals in 21 states, Commonspirit Health, the healthcare system, is comprised of hundreds of non-profits. Executive Compensation at Trinity Health (MI)

Trinity Health is a tax-exempt non-profit Catholic healthcare system that employee more than 120,000 in 92 hospitals and more than 120 continuing healthcare locations (i.e. senior living, hospice, home care, etc) in 22 states. Based in Livonia, Michigan, Trinity Health includes hundreds of related and affiliated organizations. This post reports the executive compensation at Trinity Health Corporation (THC), which overseas the entire healthcare system.

Governed by 15 directors (14 of whom are independent), THC has a board made up of 7 women and 9 men (note: 16 directors are listed on the Form 990, which appears due to timing differences). Read more »
