Sunflower Seed Whole Grain Bread by Sant Ambroeus

Rarely am I impressed with bread served in a restaurant so when a friend who hails from New York City insisted I try the Sunflower Seed Whole Grain Bread at Sant (St.) Ambroeus, my expectations were low. For me, the most excellent of breads must have aroma – that yeasty smell that is indisputably comforting, a crunch on the outside, a soft, chewy texture on the inside and most important of all:  flavor. There are many loaves of bread that look good but very few that look and taste incredible.  Just like men, right?  Just kidding. Read more »

Dimples (the fruit, not the adorable result of a smile)

A Dimple is a sweet, easy-to-eat seedless Mandarin orange that is nutritious and delicious. With an easy to peel flesh (the whole orange can be peeled in one piece, a Dimple is a hybrid (the “gold nugget”) of the Mandarin variety with a bright orange bumpy “dimpled” rind which is how the fruit got its name.

It’s not a coincidence the name of this fruit shares its meaning with the adorable result of a smile.  Peel and eat a Dimple and you can’t help but smile, which if you’re lucky enough, will show in those cute dimples! Read more »

Fever-Tree Naturally Light Tonic Water

If 99% of your tonic and lime is tonic, make sure you use the best.

With summer fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about refreshing drinks to enjoy after those long, hot summer days.  Few drinks are as thirst quenching as a large glass filled with ice cubes, tonic and a slice of lime with the secret in the tonic. Really good tonic has the perfect balance of bitter from quinine (that comes from the cinchona tree) and sweet that can be from table sugar (sucrose), high fructose corn syrup (fructose and glucose derived from corn), artificial sweeteners, or just plain fructose (a natural sweetener found primarily in fruits, vine fruits, flowers, berries, and most root vegetables). Where are my glasses?

People of a certain age (over 40) know that reading glasses are a necessity of day-to-day living because the eyes are definitely not what they used to be. If you’ve ever been in a dark restaurant and been given a menu with more than 3 items on it and not had reading glasses handy, then you know the sense of frustration at not being able to read the font that seems to grow smaller every year. Put the menu up to a candle and risk a bonfire and the ire of the server not to mention the fire department. Read more »

The Kiwiberry

The kiwiberry is the ultimate popper.

Kiwiberries arrived in grocery stores this week so grab a half pint container while you can.  If you’ve never heard of a kiwiberry, then you’re not alone.

Relatively new to the US, a kiwiberry is a small green fruit (about the size of a cherry tomato or a large green olive) with a smooth (no fuzz) edible skin and a concentrated very sweet kiwi flavor that will have you popping them in your mouth as fast as you can chew them (which is really fast).  Because of their size, the kiwiberry can be eaten like a grape but the little green fruits can also be cut in half or quartered and added to a fruit salad. Livionex

We all know that good oral health is critical for our overall well-being so we brush our teeth two or three times a day, floss, and see a dental hygienist once or twice a year to professionally clean our teeth. Walking out of the dentist’s office with sparkly clean teeth is a great feeling but it never lasts long. So what can we do to maintain healthy gums and teeth? The answer:  use Livionex: a tooth gel that removes more plaque than other commercial toothpaste.

Several months ago, I read an article in the Wall Street Journal about a certain traveler’s must-haves. On that list was Livionex dental gel. Intrigued, I went to the company website and read about the benefits of using Livionex compared to regular commercial toothpaste.  The website told me that Livionex: Read more »

Tootsie Rolls versus Choco Chews

Some baby boomer candy aficionados are old enough to remember the commercial where Mr. Owl asked the rhetorical question: “how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop?” According to Mr. Owl, the answer is “three” but that’s because he bit into the pop to get to the Tootsie Roll center (patience wasn’t one of his virtues). The actual answer is 252-364 licks according to a group of engineering students at Perdue University. But, that’s besides the point. The real issue is the Tootsie Roll center because that’s what Mr. Owl and every fan of the Tootsie Roll wants. Read more »

The Creamiest Oatmeal Ever: Milkadamia Oatmeal

Oatmeal is oatmeal, right? Well…..not exactly.  The quality and the texture (whole grain is better than quick cooking) of the oats matters because flavor counts but it is virtually impossible to look at oats and assess the flavor. You have to read reviews and try various brands until you find the flavor you want..and, then you have to master the cooking part.

Most people cook oats with water – which produces a somewhat bland tasting oatmeal unless you are the lucky owner of some serious oats like Cayuga Pure Organics Erick’s Rolled Oats or Anson Mills). If you can’t get your hands on one of those bags, then consider Bob’s Red Mill Organic Oats – a 32 ounce bag is about $5 at grocery stores nationwide…but don’t use water. Read more »
