The Arthritis Foundation, Inc. (AF) is a 501 (c)(3) whose mission is to improve the lives of those suffering from arthritis through advocacy (lobbying for access to treatment and medications), program services, community programs, professional education, and supporting research.
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, AF has a national office (a not-for-profit Georgia corporation) and chartered entities (offices in virtually every state which serves local communities) throughout the United States which are separate 501 (c)(3)’s and consequently, file separate 990’s. Samaritan’s Purse – based out of Boone, North Carolina – is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) established in 1970 by Bob Pierce who died in 1978. W. Franklin Graham (son of Billy Graham) became Chairman, President, and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse in 1979 and has held the position since although he is also an evangelist for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational Christian organization that provides “spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.” Read more 
Where does $10 to Paws for Purple Hearts Go?
Paws for Purple Hearts (PPH) is a non-profit (501) (c) (3) that teaches veterans to train service dogs for their fellow veterans with combat related injuries. According to the organization’s website, PPH provides the guidance for this program but according to the IRS Form 990 (2014) submitted to the IRS, PPH raised $1,311,433 and spent just $150,661 on this program – less than 12% of the revenue raised went towards the organization’s program.
The remaining funds were spent primarily on fundraising – in fact, $805,930 was spent on mailing lists, printing and publications, postage and shipping, professional fundraising services, supplies, and related office expenses. $99,242 was spent on the management of the organization while $255,610 was retained by the organization in their fund balance although PPH did give $29,917 to Bergin University for Canine Studies, which is where the program is from. Blessings in a Backpack: How much goes towards the Backpack?
This past week, the Wall Street Journal had a full-page ad for a non-profit 501 (c) (3) called Blessings in a Backpack, a Louisville, Kentucky-based organization that feeds elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal free or reduced meal program, and may not have “any or enough food” on the weekends by giving them backpacks with food that requires little or no preparation. How do they do this? By mobilizing communities, organizations, businesses, and individuals to donate and/or participate in their program. Read more

Feeding Children Everywhere is a Longwood, Florida-based non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization that does one thing exceptionally well: they make a wholesome, all-natural meal (with no artificial flavors, colors, or vitamin mix) called the “lentil casserole.” Made of lentils (60%), rice (30%), veggies (8%) and pink Himalayan salt (2%), the lentil casserole is a nutritionally sound meal full of protein, fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.
