479 Popcorn

479 Popcorn is a premium artisan popcorn hand-made and air-popped in San Francisco, California.  The company was founded by Jean Arnold whose love of popcorn began in her childhood when her mother used to make fresh popcorn in a hand-cranked stove-top popper. Jean grew up and attended Le Cordon Bleu in London before venturing out on her own in the organic popcorn business. Prior to starting her company, Jean discovered that 479 degrees is the optimal temperature for popping corn which is how she came to name her company.

The company produces 8 flavors of popcorn that have no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. My daughter and I share a passion for the The Fleur de Sel Caramel which contains: organic, non-GMO air-popped popcorn, organic agave nectar, brown sugar, butter, baking soda, fleur de sel, and organic coconut oil. Positively addicting, the Fleur de Sel Caramel tastes like kettlecorn – buttery, slightly salty, sweet and crunchy – which means a 4 ounce bag only lasts a few minutes in our home. There are about 100 calories (4 grams of fat) per one cup serving (each 4 ounce bag has 4 servings) although I would eat this popcorn no matter what the calorie or fat content; it’s that good.

Alderwood Smoked Sea Salt: Light crunchy kernels of popcorn with a scant drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a touch of alderwood smoked sea salt.

Black Truffle and White Cheddar: Light crunchy popcorn drizzled with premium truffle oil and finished with aged, white cheddar.

Chipotle Caramel and Almonds: Chipotles are blended with organic ancho chili and blended with dark, rich caramel and roasted almonds and then blended with light, crunchy popcorn.

Ginger Sesame Caramel: Golden buttery caramel infused with ginger and then blended with crisp, fluffy popcorn.

Madras Curry Coconut and Cashew: Chilis, paprika, and turmeric are blended to make a madras curry and then tossed with toasted coconut, whole spiced cashews, and light crunchy popcorn.

Pimentón de La Vera: Pimentón (a pepper spice grown in Spain) is blended with a hand-ground mixture of organic sun-dried tomatoes and onions and then blended with crisp, fluffy popcorn. Although the color screams “cheetos,” the flavor is anything but.

Vietnamese Cinnamon Sugar:  Light, crunchy popcorn topped with Vietnamese cinnamon and sugar crystals.

I purchased the 4 ounce pouches at a Fresh Market in Westport, Connecticut for $3 per bag.
