KIND Bars

by Anne Paddock

In 2003, Daniel Lubetzky, an entrepreneur launched KIND – a healthy snack company based on two principles: the word “and” meaning that his snacks would be tasty and healthy; and “kindness” with reference to treating your body, taste buds, and the world with unexpected kindness.  Most health bars lack taste and texture which I can attest to as I’ve tried just about every bar on the market and most were one-time purchases so as the years passed, my expectations for any kind of healthy snack bar that tasted exceptional diminished until I discovered KIND bars.  Not only are KIND bars convenient and wholesome, but they are healthy and tasty – an unexpected coupling as these two descriptions don’t often go together. The only caveat:  the consumer needs to be a nut-lover to enjoy these bars because the main ingredient of each variety bar is some type of nut. Crunchy, chewy, and delicious accurately describe KIND bars.

23387_10151502122572559_2102074559_nThe KIND company has four groups of snacks: Fruit and Nut Bars, KIND Plus Bars, KIND Nuts & Spices, and Healthy Grains, which are pouches of clusters.  There are eleven types of Fruit and Nut Bars: Almond & Apricot, Almond & Coconut, Apple Cinnamon and Pecan, Peanut Butter & Strawberry, Walnut & Date, Fruit & Nut Delight, Nut Delight, Macadamia & Apricot, Sesame & Peanuts with Chocolate, Almond & Apricot in Yogurt, and Fruit & Nuts in Yogurt.  Each bar contains all natural ingredients with no preservatives, chemical additives, or hydrogenated oils. One of my favorites, the Almond & Coconut Bar contains: almonds, dried coconut, honey, non-GMO glucose, puffed rice, chicory fiber, and soy lecithin while another, the Nut Delight contains: peanuts, almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts, honey, non-GMO glucose, crisp rice, flax seed, chicory root fiber, and soy lecithin.

534922_10150792216552559_1228907378_nThe company offers eight types of KIND Plus bars: Almond Cashew & Flax, Almond Walnut Mix & Protein, Cranberry Almond, Mango Macadamia & Calcium, Peanut Butter with Dark Chocolate, Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew, Pomegranate Blueberry Pistachio, and Blueberry Pecan & Fiber. Again, the ingredients are just what you would expect.  The Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew bar contains: almonds, dark chocolate, cherries, cranberries, cashews, peanuts, raisins, honey, non-GMO glucose, crisp rice, chicory fiber, soy lecithin, vitamins. These bars are packed with a nutritional boost which could be protein, fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and/or minerals which is why they are called “Plus” bars.

KIND manufactures four types of Nuts & Spice bars including: Dark Chocolate & Pecan, Madagascar Vanilla & Almond, Dark Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt, and Cashew and Ginger Spice. These bars have 5 grams of sugar or less and the ingredients list stays true to the company commitment to wholesome ingredients. The Madagascar Vanilla & Almond contains almonds, peanuts, cashews, walnuts, honey, non-GMO glucose, chicory root fiber, crisp rice, Madagascar vanilla, and soy lecithin.

554890_10150743447937559_1995934511_nEach bar sells individually for $1.49 – $1.99, depending on the retailer. I buy the bars by the dozen from www.amazon.com for about $15 (shipping included with Amazon Prime) which works out to be about $1.25 per bar. However, the bars can also be purchased on-line directly from the company with substantial discounts given for larger purchases.

546705_10151178373722559_2042217221_nHealthy Grains are pouches of clusters that come in six flavors: Peanut Butter Whole Grain, Vanilla Blueberry with Flax Seeds, Cinnamon Oat with Flax Seeds, Maple Walnut with Chia and Quinoa, Dark Chocolate and Cranberry, Oats and Honey with Toasted Coconut. The Oats and Honey Clusters with Toasted Coconut contain: whole grains (oats, brown rice, millet, oat flour, buckwheat, amaranth, quinoa), evaporated cane juice, coconut, honey, canola oil, chicory root fiber, sesame seeds, molasses, sea salt, Vitamin E. Each 11-ounce bag sells for approximately $4.50 – $6.00, depending on the retailer. The clusters can be purchased directly from the company or through various on-line retailers, including Amazon.

KIND bars are the perfect bar to stick in your purse or backpack for a snack that has taste, texture, and can claim to be healthy.
