Steep and Cheap (SAC)

by Anne Paddock

Steep and Cheap is a unique website that sells premium outdoor gear and clothing but what sets this website apart from other discount websites are two things:  first, the prices are unbelievably low; and second, only one deal is offered at a time for a very short period of time (usually 10-40 minutes) or until the item sells out (which is sometimes very, very quickly as in minutes).  Then, it’s on to the next deal. The sales are constant so those on the prowl for gear or great athletic wear need to act fast. But, as soon as one deal is over, another kicks in….all day long.

The selection is vast – jackets, socks, coats, boots, shoes, tents, hats, gloves, shirts, pants, shorts, hoodies, sweaters, vests, backpacks, and more – and the brands offered are the best names in sportswear and gear:  SmartWool, Patagonia, Stoic, North Face, Mammut, Columbia, Marmot, Four Square, Black Diamond, Cloudveil, Canada Goose, Icebreaker, Mountain Hardware, Keen, Scarpa and more, just to name a few.

Examples of some of the most recent products offered include SmartWool socks: instead of paying $14 for a pair, Steep and Cheap offered them for $5.22 (and the inventory isn’t low…there were 600 pairs of socks to start with but within 12 minutes, the inventory was down to 395 pairs). A black Arc’teryx hooded softshell jacket for women was featured for $170 instead of $350 and a men’s Pantagonia jacket in three colors (blue, red, or orange) was discounted to $149.95 from $375. A fleece Marmot zip hooded jacket in green or blue for women was on sale for $54.95 (the original price was $125).

Steep and Cheap is owned by Backcountry.com – one of the most popular outdoor gear and clothing on-line retailers that specializes in high-end outdoor gear and clothing from the industry’s top brands (more than 1,000). Founded in 1996, Backcountry was started by two-time Olympian and six-time National Champion Nordic ski jumper Jim Holland and John Breese, a writer and entrepreneur. Together they shared a passion for backcountry skiing and a fascination with selling gear on-line. Since then, Backcountry has expanded to include four on-line retailers, one closeout on-line retailer (www.departmentofgoods.com) and five ODAT (one deal at a time) on-line retailers, one of which is Steep and Cheap:  www.steepandcheap.com.

For those too busy to keep on eye on the constant sales, there is an app available through the Steep and Cheap website that lets you know about the deals without always having a browser window open. Their motto:  “One killer gear deal, one item at a time until it’s gone.”  That about says it all.
