Tatte’s Fine Cookies, Cakes, Pastries and Tarts
Tatte Fine Cookies & Cakes is a Massachusetts-based bakery and cafe specializing in cookies, cakes, pastries, and tarts made with all natural and top quality ingredients including butter, flour, eggs, vanilla, chocolate, cheese, nuts and fresh fruits and vegetables. With two storefronts in the Boston area – the original bakery in Brookline and the newest shop in Cambridge – an on-line mail order business and high quality gourmet shops (i.e. Dean & Deluca) carrying the bakery’s products, Tatte’s sinfully delicious creations can be enjoyed by virtually anyone.
Tzurit Or, an extraordinary baker was born in Israel and moved to the United States after she was married eventually settling in Brookline, Massachusetts where she first started selling her baked products at the Copley Square Farmers Market before opening her first bakery in 2008. Four years later, Tatte’s is getting the recognition it so richly deserves.
My first introduction to Tatte’s came in the form of a cookie called “Crunchy Almonds” – a blend of slivered almonds, powdered sugar, eggs, and vanilla baked to perfection resulting in a delicate crunchy cookie full of toasted almonds that is scrumptious and addicting.
The bakery has a line of butter cookies made with a variety of nuts – pistachios (heavenly), pecans (blissful), almonds (delightful)- or plain (just plain yummy) – each as delicious as the next. The butter cookies come in a clear plastic bag (12 for $6) with a beautiful beige raffia ribbon or in a clear box with 24 cookies for $11. Crunchy almonds are packaged in a 5 ounce clear bag, also tied with a raffia ribbon for $7.
Tatte’s nut boxes are unique in both beauty and taste: rectangular shaped tarts with a buttery crust filled with a caramelized filling and topped off with toasted cashews, walnuts, pecans, and pistachios. For the nut lover, these individualized tarts (4 inches by 2.5 inches) are beautiful to admire but taste even better than they look. Prefer a specific nut box with just pistachios, walnuts, pecans, or cashews? Each nut box is also made with a single choice nut.
Tatte’s makes 14 different types of tarts: blackberry, strawberry, plum, fig, pear, cashew, walnut, pecan, hazelnut, almond, pistachio, mixed nuts, Belgian chocolate, and Belgian Chocolate with Pecans which tastes like a pecan pie made with a rich creamy chocolate filling. Most of the tarts come in individual serving sizes (4 inches by 2.5 inches) or as a large tart (13.75 inches by 4.25 inches). Priced at $6-$7 for the individual tarts and $30 – $42 for the large tart, depending on the filling.
Pastries include brioche in a variety of flavors – plain , chocolate, savory filled with spinach and ricotta cheese or Portobello mushrooms and onions – and quiche with tomato, zucchini, or onion – and various flowered shaped yeast breads called “roses” that come in chocolate, halva, hazelnut, savory, and cinnamon pecan.
Tatte’s also makes the standard fare – croissants, cream cheese croissants, and rustic apple tarts although these pastries are anything but typical with a rich, buttery flaky crust. Pastries start at $2 and quiches start at $5 for an individual quiche (4 inches by 2.5 inches) and $32 for a large quiche (13.75 inches by 4.25 inches) that serves 6-8.
Tatte’s makes a chocolate cake for everyone: Heavenly Belgian (flourless chocolate fudge cake topped with crunchy walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts), Belgian Chocolate Mousse Cake (three layers of chocolate mousse in a walnut crust), and Chocolate Halva (layers of Belgian Chocolate surround the halva in the middle).
Bundt cakes come in peach or plum and cheesecakes include strawberry, blackberry, and crumb. There is also a Cherry Clafouti cake (fresh cherries baked in custard with Kirsch liquor and hazelnuts), a Walnut Coffee Cake and a Roses Cake (flower shaped yeast dough filled with chocolate, halva, hazelnut or a cinnamon and pecan filling). Cakes come in a several sizes (6-inch, 9-inch, and 10-inch) and sell for $28 – $50, depending on the type and size.
Biscotti, brownies, meringues, and more are also available. Go to the company’s website listed below for a complete list of products and prices and to place an order. Tatte’s products come beautifully wrapped in their signature brown box or bag with a raffia or brown netted ribbon and make a delicious gift for the sweet tooth or someone who appreciates fine baked products. Or, if you happen to be in Brookline or Cambridge (the Boston area), stop in at Tatte’s and enjoy a very special cookie, cake, pastry or tart.
